Council members sworn in at reorganization meeting
by Frank J. McMahon The Mahwah Township Council has reorganized following the every-other-year non-partisan council election in May which resulted in the reelection of three incumbents and the election of a former councilman. Municipal Court Judge Anthony Gianni swore in council members John DaPuzzo, Harry Williams, and John Spiech. Each council member received a certificate of congratulations from Bergen County Executive Dennis McNerney. Councilman Roy Larson was absent and will be sworn in at a later date. DaPuzzo was nominated to continue to serve as council president by Councilwoman Lisa DiGiulio. The nomination was seconded by Councilman John F. Roth, and DaPuzzo received the unanimous approval of all council members present. Roth was nominated to continue to serve as council vice president by DaPuzzo. Roth also received the unanimous approval of all council members present. DaPuzzo was also selected to continue to serve as the council’s liaison to the planning board. William Dator was reappointed to the board of adjustment along with Ben Kezmarsky, who was reappointed and moved up to the regular member position replacing Barbara Neumann, who was not reappointed to the board. William Laforet was reappointed to the zoning board of adjustment and moved up to the Alternate I position. Joe Larson was also appointed to the zoning board and will serve in the Alternate II position. Councilman Harry Williams was reappointed as the council’s liaison to the board of education, Councilman Samuel Alderisio was reappointed as the council’s liaison to the Senior Citizens Advisory Board, and DiGiulio was reappointed as the council’s representative to the Bergen County Community Development Committee. Louis C. Mai was reappointed as the township’s auditor, and the council acknowledged and consented to the appointments made by Mayor Richard Martel including Dennis Kiewit and Joan Blake to the Senior Citizens Advisory Board; Peter Rudolph, Todd Scherer, and John J. Kelly to the planning board; Ward Donigian, Harry Williams, Terry Mostyn, Peggy Hansen, Christopher Sariti, and Andrea Dalessio to the Recreation Committee; and Wendy DeSilva, and Robert LaMontagne to the board of health. The firm of McManimon and Scotland, LLC was appointed as the township’s bond counsel, Boswell McClave Engineering as the township’s engineering firm, Burgis Associates, Inc. as the township’s professional planner, McCarthy & Forde, LLC as the township’s risk management firm and health benefits consultant, Malcolm Pirnie, Inc. as the town’s sewer and water system engineering firm, Terry Paul Bottinelli as the township’s attorney, Dr. Glenn Leslie as police doctor, Karen A. Prelich Passaro and Robert P Zisgen as co-public defenders, and Dennis Harraka as the township prosecutor.
DaPuzzo then nominated, and the council agreed, to appoint Councilman Spiech as chairman of the Ordinance Committee, which reviews township ordinances to determine which need to be updated. Martel congratulated those council members who were reelected and he welcomed Spiech back to the council. Spiech served as a councilman from 1997 to 2004 and as council president from 1999 to 2003. “John, it’s good to have you back,” Martel said.
