Ricky Courage of Mahwah recently achieved three distinctions by becoming an Eagle Scout. In addition to attaining the top honor in Boy Scouting, Courage has also become the first member of Wyckoff Venture Crew 1332 to earn Eagle status. He is also one of a handful of Scouts to become an Eagle during 2010, the 100th year of Boy Scouting. His Court of Honor was held at Saint Elizabeth Church in Wyckoff and was attended by local government officials, teachers, family, fellow Scouts, and many friends. Only two percent of those who join Boy Scouts become Eagle Scouts. This achievement requires considerable knowledge, leadership, and skill learned over years of Scouting. The Eagle Award culminates in a community service project that must be planned, led, and executed by the Scout. Courage’s project was a Pet Care Donation Drive for Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge, Inc. This non-profit, no-kill animal shelter located in Oakland provides sanctuary and permanent loving homes for animals. Courage collected over 700 food and bedding items and monetary donations to benefit RBARI. He organized friends and fellow Boy Scouts to advertise, promote, and deliver the donations. Courage joined Scouts when he was seven years old as a Cub Scout. He received his Arrow of Light Award in June 2005, when he crossed over to Mahwah’s Boy Scout Troop 50. He held many leadership positions, including patrol leader, assistant patrol leader, den chief, and Venture Crew president. He attended camp at NoBeBosCo and Ockanickon, where he received the 2009 Camper Achievement Award for his work with younger Scouts. He also received the Parvuli Dei, Ad Alteri Dei, and Pope Pius XII emblems. His crew received the 2010 Pope Paul VI National Catholic Quality Unit Award. Courage is currently vice president of

Venture Crew 1332. Venture Crew, a relatively new branch of Boy Scout, aims to provide positive experiences to help high school and college-aged young adults develop community-related skills.
As a sophomore at Don Bosco, Courage was on Principal’s List (High Honor Roll). He is a member of the Environmental Sciences Club and was vice president of the Freshman Student Council. After completing high school, Courage plans to pursue a career in psychology.
