(continued from Restaurant page) movie for a bit of entertainment, she waits outside the theater in order to save one admission. Mendoza, who co-directs, has based the film on her mother’s experiences acclimating to the United States. The movie realistically shows the challenges and hardships Mariana faces as she makes sure she does the best she can under the circumstances for her children. Though Mariana is an illegal alien, the movie makes no political statement, focusing instead on the day-to-day drama of survival and the uncertainty of what lies ahead.
The film is in Spanish with English subtitles. Special features include director’s commentary, a behind-thescenes featurette, a look at immigration reform, and “Still Standing,” a short film by Paola Mendoza. “Courage, the Cowardly Dog: Season One” (Warner Home Video) stars animated canine Courage, who faces creepy creatures, scary monsters, and crazed villains in the middle of Nowhere, Kansas. He may do so with his tail between his legs, but Courage loves his sweet Muriel and grumpy Eustace, so he digs deep to find the strength to save his beloved family from deadly weremoles, dark shadows, and other sinister elements that pop up with great regularity in this terrifying town. The two-disc DVD contains 13 episodes. There are no extras.
