Four veteran Realtors honored Township council seeks decal law repeal (continued from page 9) license holders under the age of 21 and the resolution claims that decals make it easier for criminals and other predators to identify and target drivers under the age of 21. In addition, the resolution states that these decals have been cited as discriminatory to young drivers. Legislation has been introduced in the state government to immediately repeal the teen decal requirements, and the council’s resolution states that “the safety of our young drivers must be preserved and protected without infringing on their rights or unintentionally putting them in harm’s way.” The new law was promoted by Donna Weeks whose 16year-old daughter, Kyleigh D’Alessio, died in a car accident on Dec. 21, 2006. After her daughter’s death in the crash that also claimed the life of the teen driver and injured two other teen passengers, Weeks pursued legislators to get Kyleigh’s Law passed. Weeks contacted all 120 state legislators to garner support. In 2007, a 15-member state Teen Driver Study Commission was created to review the problem and come up with solutions. The commission’s March 2008 report made the recommendations that became the new law that took effect on May 1. A few days after Governor Christie signed the law, Gregg Trautmann, a Rockaway attorney, filed a suit to have it overturned. He called the decals “Scarlet Letters” that identify teens to stalkers or rapists. But the law was upheld in court and his lawsuit was dismissed. Opposition to the law has been increasing and some opponents of the law have called for undermining the law by having all motorists display the decals.
