The Mahwah Public Library Board of Trustees recently announced the appointment of Kurt Hadeler as the new library director effective Monday, July 19. For the last three years, Hadeler has been director of the Rye Free Reading Room (the Rye Public Library) in Rye, New York. Under his directorship, the Rye Free Reading Room was awarded four stars in the Library Journal Index of Public Library Service (Library Journal, 2/15/09) recognizing its continued growth in borrowing, program attendance, and computer use. For the previous 13 years, he worked at the White Plains Public Library as head of internal operations, library systems manager, and in reference services. He is a graduate of the State University of New

York at Albany where he received his bachelor’s and master’s of library science degrees. He is currently enrolled for a post-graduate public library administrator’s certificate program at Long Island University. Hadeler anticipates his contribution to the future of the Mahwah community as bolstering the library’s collections, offering more community-focused programs, and expanding access to computers and technology. Many long-time area residents might remember the Hadeler family from Hadeler Hardware that has been in Pearl River since 1905. Hadeler succeeds Mahwah Library Director Kenneth Giaimo, who retired and moved out of the area. Dolores Bostrom, a long-time library staff member, has been acting director since early this year.
