Page 20 THE VILLADOM TIMES I, II, III & IV • July 14, 2010 Antoine Fuqua captures the grittiness and danger of a day in the life of a cop. Bonuses on both the Blu-ray and DVD versions include audio commentary with director Fuqua, the featurettes “Chaos & Conflict: The Life of a New York Cop” and “Boyz N the Real Hood,” and deleted scenes. “Family Matters: The First Season” (Warner Home Video) is a new box set devoted to the popular TV show, which aired originally from 1989 to 1998. It focuses on the Winslows, a multi-generational, middle-class, suburban Chicago family. The show takes a closer look at the at-home adventures of Harriette Winslow (JoMarie Payton-France), the sarcastic elevator operator who was initially featured on “Perfect Strangers.” Also featured in the series are Harriette’s husband Carl (Reginald VelJohnson), a Chicago police sergeant, and their three kids: rebellious son Eddie (Darius McCrary), intelligent daughter Laura (Kellie Shanygne Williams), and youngest kid Judy (Jaimee Foxworth/Valerie Jones). Other regulars include Carl’s streetwise mom (Rosetta LeNoire) and Harriette’s sister Rachel (Telma Hopkins). During the first season, the Winslows are introduced to the show’s scene-stealing breakout star, geeky nextdoor neighbor Steve Urkel (Jaleel White). Urkel, the ultimate nerd, develops a big crush on Laura. With his oversized glasses, high-waisted pants, suspenders, and high-pitched, squeaky voice, Urkel is a textbook sight gag. The three-disc set contains 22 episodes. “Nip/Tuck: The Sixth and Final Season” (Warner Home Video) is a five-disc set containing 19 episodes. This season, the struggling practice of McNamara and Troy manages to stay afloat in a downturned economy thanks to Dr. Mike Hamoui (Mario Lopez), a plastic surgeon who brings a very unique niche specialty to their business. Sean (Dylan Walsh) marries Teddy (Rose McGowan), while Christian (Julian McMahon) is sued for divorce by a heartbroken and angry Liz (Roma Maffia). Matt (John Hensley) decides to attend mime school in an effort to start a new career, but his new vocation lands him in jail. Bonuses include a featurette about the psychology behind plastic surgery, which examines new trends and explores why people become surgery DVDs (continued from Restaurant page) Brosnan and Sarandon turn in believable performances. Brosnan in particular is really strong, appearing open and emotional. The problem is the portrayal of Bennett. More a metaphor for all that is good with untapped, unlimited potential, he never comes off as an actual flesh-and-blood individual. Since the accident is largely his responsibility, it’s tough to get on board with his parents’ grief. There are also some jarring moments when dialogue or actions seem really off and undermine the tone of the movie. Movies about grieving are tough sells. On the surface, they are depressing and put off many people. It’s the handling of the theme that determines whether audiences will embrace such a movie. Think “Ordinary People,” which had a solid script, superb direction, and first-rate performances. “The Greatest” falls far short of that high standard. Extras include interviews with the director, Pierce Brosnan and Carey Mulligan, and deleted scenes. “Brooklyn’s Finest” (Anchor Bay Entertainment) stars Richard Gere as burned-out veteran cop Eddie Dugan, just one week away from his pension and a fishing cabin in Connecticut. Narcotics officer Sal Procida (Ethan Hawke) has discovered there is no line he won’t cross to provide a better life for his wife and seven kids. Clarence “Tango” Butler (Don Cheadle) has been undercover so long his loyalties have started to shift from his fellow cops to his prison buddy Caz (Wesley Snipes), one of Brooklyn’s most notorious drug dealers. When the NYPD’s Operation Clean Up targets a drug-ridden housing project, Eddie, Sal, and Tango find themselves drawn to the same fatal crime scene. Though the plot is overly familiar and the script often cliché, the three leads elevate the film with superb performances. They believably convey the stress each is under as a working police officer, though the source of the stress differs from one to the other, and director ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20 There’s a bumpy financial road ahead, ARIES - you better start socking Aries.
