Gardeners award scholarships The Ramsey Area Garden Club has awarded Chris Hurtado a $1,000 scholarship to further his education at Bergen Community College. Hurtado is a full time employee at local nursery and working toward a degree in horticulture. Ramsey High School graduate Marielle Debbas also received a scholarship from the club. Debbas plans to pursue a degree in environmental science at Wellesley College. The garden club funds these scholarships with the proceeds from its annual plant sale. Fieldstone introduces new artist Fieldstone Fine Art will introduce paintings by Latin American artist Pablo Caviedes at the gallery located at 147 East Main Street. This native of Ecuador expresses his unique visual language within the realm of surreal symbolism. Combining skilled detail with mysticism, Caviedes works his pallet into an almost monochromatic scheme that, upon closer inspection, reveals hints of multiple colors. Children’s programs announced “Awesome Adventures: God’s People on the Move,” a Sunday morning program for children, will be held through Aug. 29. Children presently in the Nursery Class up to and including those entering fifth grade in the fall may register. A donation of $5 per child is due upon registration. Vacation Bible School for children four years old through second grade will be offered the week of Aug. 16 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the church. Summer Worship Services at the Ramsey First Presbyterian Church, 15 Shuart Lane, will continue at 10 a.m. on Sundays. All are welcome. Library offers summer reading clubs Ramsey teens are welcome to enjoy the summer with the public library’s “Teen Tuesdays,” a weekly event with food, games, and door prizes. Teen Tuesdays begin at 5 p.m. at the Ramsey Rescue Building, 41 South Island Road.
This program will continue through July 27. Drop-ins are welcome. Teens are rewarded for reading through out the summer when they join the “Make Waves” reading club. Two book clubs available to teens are Talk it Up! for grades six through eight and Speak Out! for grades nine through 12. Participants may sign up for Make Waves and the book clubs at the Ramsey Library’s temporary location on Lake Street. Children who will be entering kindergarten through second grade this fall are invited to read with a Book Buddy anytime between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. Local high school students will read for at least 20 minutes with each child. “Snuggle Time Stories,” also read by a high school student, will meet Thursdays at 7 p.m. on July 15 and 22. No signup is required for either program, both of which will be held at the library’s temporary location at 171 Lake Street. The library’s summer hours are Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. All programs are for Ramsey Library cardholders only. Farmers market institutes Pay it Forward The Ramsey Farmers Market is reaching out to others who are less fortunate with its Pay it Forward program. Visitors to the market bring non-perishable items each Sunday, and market vendors are donating fresh vegetables and fruits, breads, and freshly ground coffee to the Center for Food Action in Mahwah. The Ramsey Farmers Market is open every Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Main Street train station through Oct. 31, rain or shine. Leisure Club plans Pocono trip The Ramsey Senior Leisure Club will travel to Mount Airy Casino in the Pocono Mountains on Wednesday, July 28. The cost is $22 per person. The casino comp. will be $30 in casino money and a $5 food voucher. The bus will depart from the Lutheran Church at 9 a.m. The group will leave Mount Airy at 4 p.m. and stop at Hot Dog Johnny’s. Doug Rennie, president; Joanne Bockhorn, vice president; Carol Tonnon, treasurer; and Filamina Darmiento, secretary. The term of office is two years. Meetings are held the third Thursday of each month at the Finch Park Center. Anyone wishing to become an active participant may call (201) 825-1975. Township seniors set events Adam Wolak of Bergen County Senior Services will be at the Senior Center in Finch Park on Monday, July 19 at approximately 2:30 p.m. to distribute farmers market vouchers to eligible seniors. The farmers market will be held at the Main Street Train Station every Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. until Halloween. Vendors sell farm fresh organic and non-organic fruits and vegetables. Special event days will be held during the summer. There will be a two-hour pontoon cruise on the Hackensack River on Thursday, July 22. The van will leave Finch Park at 5 p.m. for the 6 p.m. history tour sunset cruise and return at approximately 9 p.m. The Hackensack Riverkeeper will travel the same route traveled by the coastal schooners that used to carry cargo to and from Bergen County. Sign up at borough hall. The cost is $35 per person. Attendees may bring a picnic dinner or snack to eat aboard the boat. Upcoming fall events include a bus trip to New York City to see the Broadway show “Billy Elliott” on Sept.8, the annual Ramsey Day on Sept. 11, and the Senior Pool Party and Barbecue on Sept. 15. Most senior activities will continue during the summer months. yoga and tai chi will return in September. There will be no bingo in August. Bocce for men is available at the Ramsey Pool area every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 10 a.m. Women meet for bocce on Thursday at 10 a.m. Teens available for employment YES, the Youth Employment Service, now has Ramsey High School teens who will babysit or pet sit, and can handle computer and office work, and a host of other responsibilities. Register for football and cheerleading The Ramsey Junior Football Association’s football and cheerleading registration is now open.
