McMahon The Mahwah Police Department appointed two new police officers and promoted three others at the last public meeting of the township council. Michael Direnzo and Sean Hayes were appointed to the department, while Robert Sinnaeve was promoted to captain of the operations division, Scott Chevron was promoted to the grade of lieutenant, and Timothy O’Hara was promoted to the rank of sergeant. The police officers were sworn in by Mayor Richard Martel, who congratulated all of them. The mayor then introduced resident Richard Fairservice who publicly thanked the members of the police department for their service. “I was driving to work on Route 202 at 7:40 in the morning when I suffered a stroke and a heart attack and I had a near collision,” Fairservice said. He added that, thanks to the response of Officers Roasario Zito and Michael Jack, and Sergeant Scott Cherven, his life was saved. “They saved my life, and I want to thank the council for giving me the opportunity to thank them publicly,” Fairservice said. “I hope the town appreciates what they do for them.” Direnzo joined the township’s police department during the past year. He graduated from the Bergen County Police Academy and has several years of law enforcement experience, having served with the New York City Police Department before coming to Mahwah. A resident of Bergen County, he holds a bachelor of science degree in criminal justice from Rutgers University and successfully completed the field training program. He is currently working as a squad patrol officer. Hayes joined the township’s police department in November after graduating from the Bergen County Police Academy alternate route program. He attended Montclair State University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and he previously worked as a police dispatcher for the Ramsey Police Department. He is a Bergen County resident. Upon completion of the department’s field training program, he will be assigned to a squad in the patrol division. Sinnaeve has been serving with the Mahwah Police Department for 21 years and he is a life-long resident of the township. Prior to his appointment to the police department, he served as a military police officer in the United States Marine Corps.
