Township council welcomes newest member
by Frank J. McMahon Confirming what has been rumored and reported since last November, the Mahwah Township Council has appointed Harry Williams, the current chairman of the Mahwah Recreation Committee, to the unexpired term of Robert Hermansen. Hermansen resigned from the council after he was elected a Bergen County Freeholder. State law prohibits an elected county public office holder from serving as an elected member of a municipal governing body at the same time. He resigned from the township council on Jan. 6, immediately before he was sworn-in as a freeholder. Williams was appointed at the council’s last public meeting and sworn in by Mayor Richard Martel. At that time, the governing body also appointed Councilman John Roth to replace Hermansen as the council’s vice president. Roth, who was not present at the meeting, will be sworn in at a future council session. Several people indicated interest in the open seat on the council, according to Mahwah Council President John DaPuzzo, but he said a consensus developed early on that Williams would be the majority choice to replace Hermansen. That consensus was confirmed at the council’s last public meeting. Williams will step down from his membership on the township’s planning board, but he said he intends to retain his position as chairman of the Recreation Committee. The new councilman sought election to the governing body in 2006, but lost that election by two votes to Roy Larson, the fourth of the top four candidates who were elected to the council that year. Williams will have to seek election to the council in May when Hermansen’s term expires. A 16-year resident of the township, Williams is a 1971 graduate of Rutgers University with a BA in economics. He has been the chairman of the township’s Recreation Committee since July of 2006. A footwear business executive for 36 years, Williams also owns a Sparta-based swim (continued on page 16)
