Seniors invited to free tax program Trained AARP counselors will be available at the Mahwah Senior Center from Feb. 5 through April 9 between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. AARP Tax-Aide is the nation’s largest free, volunteer-run tax assistance and preparation service available to taxpayers with low- and middle-income, with special attention to those who are age 60 and older. This year, some tax returns can be filed electronically. Those seeking assistance should call to make an appointment and are asked to bring their previous tax returns, information on their 2009 earnings (including pensions, 1099s, Social Security, and other supporting forms). All homeowners and tenants must complete a New Jersey return, regardless of their taxable income, if they wish to apply for the Fair Rebate. Time to renew pet licenses Animal licenses for the Township of Mahwah expired on Dec. 31, 2009 and must be renewed during the month of January and the first two weeks of February. Fees are $7 for an altered animal and $10 for an unaltered animal. Proof of altering from a veterinarian is required if not previously submitted. A late fee of $10 per animal will be added after Feb. 15. The late fee is in addition to the cost of the license. A certificate of rabies vaccination from a veterinarian valid through Nov. 1 of the licensing year must be provided. If the certificate of rabies vaccination was previously provided, is still valid, and is on file in the municipal clerk’s office, resubmission is not required. Licenses are available from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, except for municipal holidays, at the clerk’s office, 475 Corporate Drive in Mahwah, or by mail. When renewing by mail, applicants must provide a self-addressed, stamped envelope along with the required fees. If applicable, a certificate of rabies vaccination and/or proof of altering should be submitted. Any documents submitted shall be returned. On Jan. 26 and Feb. 2 and 9, the clerk’s office will be open until 8 p.m. for animal licensing.

National park is slideshow subject Professional physicist and award-winning amateur photographer Frederick Dammont will present a slideshow and lecture on Arches National Park on Monday, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. at the Mahwah Public Library, 100 Ridge Road, Mahwah. The park, located in Moab, Utah, has more than 2,000 sandstone arches and other unusual rock formations. This program is free. Lewis’ “The Screwtape Letters” will be the topic of the Not by Bread Alone spiritual book discussion group on Sunday, Feb. 7. In this humorous and perceptive exchange between two devils, Lewis delves into moral questions, temptation, repentance, and grace. In his new position, he will be responsible for overseeing the operations of the patrol division. Cherven currently resides in Mahwah and has been with the police department for 11 years. He previously worked for the Allendale Police Department. He has a bachelor’s degree in business from Upsala College, and a master’s degree in education from Seton Hall University. He has served as a squad sergeant for the past four years and has supervised the department field training officer program. In his new position, he will be responsible for supervising squad activities, managing personnel, and coordinating the traffic bureau and drunk driving enforcement programs. O’Hara is a Ramsey resident and has been serving as a patrol officer with the Mahwah Police Department for 11 years. He holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Delaware and a master’s degree in human resources and education from Seton Hall University. In his new position, he will be responsible for the daily operations of a patrol squad and the officers under his supervision.
