Lewis’ “The Screwtape Letters” will be the topic of the Not by Bread Alone spiritual book discussion group on Sunday, Feb. 7. In this humorous and perceptive exchange between two devils, Lewis delves into moral questions, temptation, repentance, and grace. Seniors invited to free tax program Trained AARP counselors will be available at the Mahwah Senior Center from Feb. 5 through April 9 between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. AARP Tax-Aide is the nation’s largest free, volunteer-run tax assistance and preparation service available to taxpayers with low- and middle-income, with special attention to those who are age 60 and older. This year, some tax returns can be filed electronically. Those seeking assistance should call to make an appointment and are asked to bring their previous tax returns, information on their 2009 earnings (including pensions, 1099s, Social Security, and other supporting forms). All homeowners and tenants must complete a New Jersey return, regardless of their taxable income, if they wish to apply for the Fair Rebate. Foundation to host ‘red carpet’ event The Mahwah Schools Foundation will hold its annual trustee dinner on Tuesday, Feb. 23, at Seasons in Washington Township. All proceeds from the “Night on the Red Carpet” fundraiser will benefit Mahwah’s six public schools, providing innovative programming, equipment, and technology. The event will be held from 6:30 to 11:30 p.m. and will include cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, dinner, music by Hollywood Entertainment, dancing, a basket fundraiser, and a cash prize. Prize items will include Broadway show tickets, Nets tickets, personal training packages, a private event gathering at Nieman Marcus featuring Trish McEvoy products, an iPod and other electronic equipment, gift certificates to local vendors and restaurants, and a $500 gift certificate to the Wyckoff Family YMCA. The cost to attend this event is $100 per person. Time to renew pet licenses Animal licenses for the Township of Mahwah expired on Dec. 31, 2009 and must be renewed during the month of January and the first two weeks of February. Fees are $7 for an altered animal and $10 for an unaltered animal. Proof of altering from a veterinarian is required if not previously submitted. A late fee of $10 per animal will be added after Feb. 15. The late fee is in addition to the cost of the license. A certificate of rabies vaccination from a veterinarian valid through Nov. 1 of the licensing year must be provided. If the certificate of rabies vaccination was previously provided, is still valid, and is on file in the municipal clerk’s office, resubmission is not required. Licenses are available from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, except for municipal holidays, at the clerk’s office, 475 Corporate Drive in Mahwah, or by mail. When renewing by mail, applicants must provide a self-addressed, stamped envelope along with the required fees. Parenting series continues Grace and Truth Chapel will continue its “Value-Packed Parenting” family video series on Sunday, Jan. 31 at 2 p.m. with the program “10 Ways to Improve Your Child’s SelfConfidence.” This is the next in a series hosted every six weeks at the chapel. The speaker will be Dr. Kevin Leman, author of more than 30 books and speaker on family issues for several decades. He is also known to morning television viewers as a contributor to ABC’s “Good Morning America” and CNN’s “American Morning.” This presentation will help equip families to raise rock-solid kids in a pleasure-driven world. Dr. Leman combines Bible verses, humor, and practical, specific points that will support today’s children and families. Mahwah’s Junior B Black Team proudly displays their trophy at the end of the season party which was held at Continental Soldiers’s Field in Mahwah.
