Page 2 THE VILLADOM TIMES I, II, III & IV • January 20, 2010 Villadom Happenings Fyke features reptiles, eagles On Jan. 22, Fyke Nature Association will host Patrick Scheuer, director of the New Jersey Audubon Society’s Franklin Lakes-based Lorrimer Sanctuary. Scheuer will present “Reptiles and Amphibians” at 8 p.m. at the Wyckoff Public Library, 200 Woodland Avenue, Wyckoff. New Jersey is home to a variety of reptiles and amphibians, and Scheuer will discuss some of the state’s resident snakes, turtles, lizards, salamanders, and frogs. A few live “visitors” may be present. On Jan. 23, Fyke will host its annual field trip to view bald eagles. The group will meet at the Allendale Municipal Building at 8 a.m. This year, the group will take a different route to new places. Participants should wear multiple layers of warm clothing and should bring lunch, binoculars, and spotting scopes. Rain or snow cancels this trip. Computer courses available Christian Health Care Center in Wyckoff is offering a two-day computer course that is open to the community. “Introduction to Word” is being offered from 9 a.m. to noon on Thursday, Feb. 4 (Part I), and from 9 a.m. to noon Friday, Feb. 5 (Part II), at the CHCC campus at 301 Sicomac Avenue. Follow signs for Building 1, second floor Computer Lab. Class size is limited; participants must pre-register. The course fee is $25 and includes hands-on training and training materials. Forum for stroke survivors offered As part of its comprehensive continuum of care, The Valley Hospital Stroke Center offers a Stroke Support Group that provides a positive forum for stroke survivors and their caregivers dealing with life issues after a stroke. Members are able to share their challenges, triumphs, and other personal experiences. The group meets on the fourth Tuesday of every month in The Valley Hospital Board Room from 5:30 to 7 p.m. New members are welcome. Audition for ‘The Wizard of Oz’ The Wyckoff YMCA, 691 Wyckoff Avenue in Wyckoff. will hold auditions for “The Wizard of Oz” on Jan. 28 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. and on Jan. 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Callbacks will be held Jan. 31 beginning at 11 a.m. The production will be staged May 13 through 16 at the Carl Pfeifer Performing Arts Center at the Wyckoff Y. Rehearsals begin first week of February, and will be held on evening and weekends. Those who audition should prepare a short song to be sung with a pianist. Bring sheet music, and headshot resume. An accompanist will be provided. Individuals who audition should also be prepared to learn a short dance combination. This is a non-union production; performers will not be paid. Arts scholarship available Skyline Theatre Company is offering a $1,000 scholarship to support Bergen County high school seniors who will be furthering their education by majoring in theater, television, film, or communications. The Harry K. Berkheiser Jr. Scholarship, named for the founding STC member, will be awarded yearly to a Bergen County high school senior. Schulz presents ‘The Garden in Winter’ At the Jan. 26 master gardener meeting, Janet Schulz will present a special interactive program on “The Garden in Winter from the Inside Out.” The session will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Community Services Building on 327 East Ridgewood Avenue, Paramus. The meeting is free and open to all interested gardeners. Refreshments will be served at 7 p.m. For both novice and skilled gardeners, winter is a time to reflect upon the garden, a chance to “see” negative and positive aspects, and to review and plan for spring renovations and planting. Schulz, a master gardener and horticultural lecturer, spent 40 years employed in the garden center industry. She is active in area garden clubs, and the Tri-State Hosta, American Rock Garden, and New England Primrose societies. She has been a featured commentator on cable television and lectures at the Ridgewood Community School.
