Wilson offers program on annuals The Ho-Ho-Kus Garden Club will join the Allendale Garden Club for a presentation on “Annuals: Flowers for a Season” by Pamela Wilson, senior horticultural program specialist for Morris County. Women in transition invited to network The YWCA of Bergen County and Bergen Community College will present “Knowledge is Power: A Resource & Networking Event for Women in Transition” on March 5 at Bergen Community College’s Moses Center, 400 Paramus Road, Paramus. Registration starts at 8 a.m. and the program runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Women who are dealing with a significant change in their personal and professional lives, from job loss and divorce to retirement and aging, will find vital information, resources, and support. Speakers, panel discussions, and workshops will address how to “Take Charge of Your Career and Finances” and “Create Lifelong Health and Wellness.” Participating organizations and businesses include AARP, AXA Advisors, LLC, BrightStar Healthcare of Greater Hackensack, Coalition of 100 Black Women, The Commission on the Status of Women, Heritage Pointe of Teaneck, Holy Name Hospital, Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, The Valley Hospital, Van Dyk Health Care, Inc., and Weichert Realtors. Resume writing and interviewing skills workshops will be provided throughout the day by the Bergen Community College Employment Pathway Initiative. Vendors and resource providers will also be on hand. The cost is $25 ($15 for BCC students), which includes a continental breakfast and buffet lunch. Symphony to perform romantic melodies On March 5, the Ridgewood Symphony Orchestra will perform an 8 p.m. concert at the Benjamin Franklin Middle School in Ridgewood. The program will include Shakespeare’s famous lovers, Romeo and Juliet, in an overturefantasy by Tchaikovsky, and Porgy and Bess in an opera by George Gershwin, based on the novel “Porgy” by DuBose Heyward. Also on the program is the world premiere of “Fanfare for Orchestra” by Pasquale Tassone, selections from Puccini’s “La Boheme,” and “Valse Triste” by Sibelius. The concert will feature Ridgewood soprano Kristen Plumley and tenor Theodore Chletsos. Tickets may be purchased before the concert for $20, $15, or $10, by going to the RSO’s website, www.ridgewoodsymphony.org, or at Oliver’s Chocolates, at 46 East Ridgewood Avenue in Ridgewood. Country dancers welcome newcomers The North Jersey English Country Dancers welcome newcomers to on Sunday, Feb. 28 at the Unitarian Society of Ridgewood, 113 Cottage Place. Ministry, in its continuing effort to provide help to people seeking employment, will present the first of a four-part series of winter/spring workshops on Sunday, Feb. 21 at noon. The workshop will be held in the meeting room in the lower church and is open to anyone seeking employment and those who anticipate possible unemployment. Parish membership is not required. These workshops are presented by the Career Resources Ministry whose members are dedicated to helping those seeking employment. Professionals in the field will present the workshop and will be on hand to give advice. This workshop topic is “Create Your Communications Strategy and Resume.” Participants should bring a recent resume or job experience information. Anyone interested is welcome to attend. This family needs your help: Ralph is a Bergen County resident who was diagnosed with the osteosarcoma that claimed one of his legs. Now it has spread to his chest and into his blood. As a result, he is receiving a bone marrow transplant and is due to be released from the hospital in the coming weeks. His father is disabled and cannot work, and his mom was laid off from her job and is looking for work. Mom is desperate to have her leaky roof fixed so Ralph can come home to a clean, dry environment. Given the family’s extreme misfortune, they simply do not have the resources to have the roof 4-29-09repaired. RBARI reschedules Pasta Dinner The Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge has rescheduled it Baked Ziti Dinner fundraiser for Wednesday, March 3 at 6:30 p.m. at the Grace United Methodist Church, 555 Russell Avenue, Wyckoff. There will be live music performed by John Moroski, door prizes, and more. Seating is limited to 150 guests. Dine-in and takeout orders are available by reservation only. The cost is $10 for adults and $7 for children age 12 and under. Children under three eat for free. Long Pond Ironworks to be discussed The Mahwah Museum will hold its February History Lecture, “Long Pond Ironworks,” on Thursday, Feb. 18 at the Ramapo Reformed Church Education Building, West Ramapo Avenue at Island Road, Mahwah. In 1765, the first ironmaster in this region, Peter Hasenclever, began building Long Pond Ironworks in West Milford. Ringwood Manor was already in production, having been started in the early 1740s. Paul Frost, Iron Industry historian, will provide an indepth history of the 175-acre historic landmark that made iron for both the American Revolution and the Civil War, the village, and the trail that linked Long Pond to Ringwood Manor. The program will begin at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $3 per person; free for Mahwah Museum members. Refreshments will be served. Reservations are recommended, and may be made by visiting the website at www.mahwahmuseum.org or by calling the museum at (201) 512-0099.
