Page 18 THE VILLADOM TIMES II & IV • February 10, 2010 Gibson returns to silver screen in ‘Edge of Darkness’ by Dennis Seuling Mel Gibson, who had not starred in a feature film since “Signs” (2002), recently returned to the big screen in “Edge of Darkness,” a conspiracy thriller with lots of action, a rogue cop, and a mystery surrounding the violent death of a young woman. Boston cop Thomas Craven (Gibson) is at the train station meeting his daughter Emma (Bojana Novakovic), who has decided to come home. The two are about to sit down to dinner when Emma begins coughing up blood and appears to be in great pain. While he is rushing her to the hospital, Emma is shot and killed. Assuming Craven was the one targeted for assassination, the police look into old cases, trying to find who might have wanted the cop dead. They come up empty, so Craven decides to conduct a one-man investigation. This leads him to Emma’s employer, the Northmoor Corporation, and its chairman Jack Bennett (Danny Huston). As more and more puzzle pieces are put into place, Craven realizes that Emma was the intended target. “Edge of Darkness” is a tautly edited film with little padding. In straightforward fashion, the story moves through many locations as more characters are introduced, from well-dressed hit men to a United States senator and a mysterious fixer, Jedburgh (Ray Winstone), whose loyalties are never clear and who appears as if out of thin Mel Gibson (left) and Ray Winstone in ‘Edge of Darkness.’ air at crucial points in the story. Gibson has some heavy acting scenes early on, but then goes on autopilot as parental outrage pushes him to push others -- those with power and connections in high places -- into telling what they know about his daughter, her work, and why she was murdered.
