The Mahwah Public Library has announced the retirement of Library Director Kenneth Giaimo effective Jan. 29. Giaimo had been director of the library since 1996. During his tenure, the library moved to its new building on Ridge Road and began the long-planned completion of the basement area. Library Board President Curtis P. Koster expressed the Mahwah Library Board of Trustees’ disappointment to lose Giaimo, but thanked him for his service to the township and wished him well in retirement. Delores Bostrom has been appointed acting library director while the library board searches for Giaimo’s replacement. Bostrom has been supervising librarian since 1997. Basement project (continued from page 9) meeting rooms, a place for the Library Youth Program to meet, a local history room, and a small vending-machine café where patrons can enjoy refreshments with their reading and WiFi Internet connection. The Mahwah Public Library began in 1913 as the personal library of the Bugg Family. The building was opened to readers in a Cragmere farm building. The Woman’s Club assumed control in 1920, and moved the library to a storefront in the Henrietta Building on Miller Road. In 1929, the Mahwah Free Public Library Association was created with Mrs. Annie Winter as chair from 1929 to 1946. In 1949, the library’s collection was moved into the Winter Library Building, which was largely built with gifts totaling $65,000 from Albert and AnnieWinter. In 1998, the Mahwah Public Library moved into the new building at 100 Ridge Road. Poppe Construction was also the General Contractor for that project. The present building was a product of the generosity of individual and corporate contributors and the taxpayers of the Township of Mahwah. The land was donated to the library by the board of education. The basement was not finished in 1998 due to limited funds. In the course of a budget review meeting in 2004, Councilwoman Lisa DiGiulio asked the Mahwah Library Board, “When we were going to finish the library?” About a year, later the board selected John Montoro as the architect and presented plans to the township council. At the meeting, the board request for construction funds was turned down, but at the same time, the council encouraged the library board to proceed by setting aside funds from its annual operating funds. The board did so, and with the funds already in the bank on Wednesday, Jan. 27, the Mahwah Public Library broke ground for the long-awaited completion. The Mahwah Public Library is located at 100 Ridge Road. Call the library at (201) 529-READ or visit the website at http://mahwah.bccls.org/ for library information.
