Seniors invited to New Year’s Eve Gala Mahwah Seniors are invited to a New Year’s Eve Gala on Thursday, Dec. 30 at 11 a.m. at the senior center at 475 Corporate Drive. For New Year’s week, the library will be closed on Dec. 30 and 31 and Saturday, Jan. 1. Christmas pageant, candlelight services offered Ramapo Reformed Church will celebrate Christmas with special services and events. There will be two candlelight services on Christmas Eve, one at 7 p.m. and the second at 11 p.m. The first service is an informal family service, and both services feature traditional lessons and carols. Holy Cross announces services Holy Cross Lutheran Church, a member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod located at the corner of West Ramapo Avenue and Route 202 North, has announced its Advent and Christmas services. Christmas Eve (Dec. 24) services will be held at 5 and 10 p.m. Both services will feature candlelight and Holy Communion. The early service will be for families, and the later will be a traditional service. There will be a special hymn service on Christmas morning at 10:30 a.m. and it will include Holy Communion. Restaurant discount cards available The Mahwah Regional Chamber of Commerce is offering a new restaurant discount card is as part of WinterFest, an eight-week community celebration that is now underway and will wrap up on Jan. 29, 2011. The card entitles holders to a 10 percent discount on food purchases at select Chamber member eateries. Participating restaurants include: Brady’s at the Station, Fountainview Restaurant at the Sheraton Mahwah Hotel, Mahwah Bar and Grill, Mason Jar, Moe’s Southwest Grill, Olé Olé Restaurant, Ramsey Golf and Country Club, Restaurant L, Saffron at the Woodcliff Lake Hilton, Windsor Grille Restaurant, and Lounge at the Comfort Inn Conference Center. Local artist exhibits at library Landscape artist Stephanie Cook is exhibiting her pastels and oils at the Mahwah Public Library. The Mahwah resident received a BFA from Boston University and has studied with notable artists Rosalie Nadeau, Richard McKinley, Robert Carsten, David Curtis, Karen Baker, and Joe Hing Lowe. Cook is inspired by the masters of Impressionism and the American landscape realists of the Hudson River School. Cook’s work has been exhibited at the Annual Member Juried Show of the Pastel Society of New Jersey, the Ridgewood Art Institute 30th Regional Open Juried Show, and the Wayne Public Library. She is a member of the Pastel Society of New Jersey, the Vermont Pastel Society, the New Jersey Society of En Plein Air Painters, Passionate about Pastels, Landscape Painters across America and across the Seas, and Seascapes, Dunes, Marine and Coastal Painters. Adult sports programs welcome players Mahwah women over age 21 are invited to participate in Wednesday Night Volleyball. Each Wednesday through June 15, an open game of volleyball will be played from 7 to 9 p.m. Mahwah men are invited to play basketball on Tuesday nights from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. These pick up games are open to Mahwah residents only. Board seeks volunteers The Mahwah Board of Health is organizing a local team of residents and medical personnel who live or work in Mahwah and are available to volunteer in the event of a public health emergency. Both medical professionals and non-medical volunteers are needed, including nurses, nurse practitioners, doctors, physician’s assistants, pharmacists, veterinarians, dentists, data entry personnel, interpreters, telephone staffers, interviewers, runners, clerical support staff, and crowd control personnel. Research materials include books on job searches, writing resumes and cover letters, interviewing, networking, franchising, starting your own business, finding a civil service job, and more. There are DVDs on grooming and dressing for success, getting a first job, planning a career, money management, the right part-time job, and a virtual job interview. There is a new brochure called “Jobseekers” that contains employment and career information on the web. Check out the “Job Center” bulletin board postings. The library has two public computers for resume writing. There are eight public Internet computers that can be used for applying for unemployment benefits and checking out job websites. All of the individuals involved are subcontractors for local utility companies. The stabbing victim was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center and is in stable condition. On Friday, Dec. 10 Ramsey police responded to The Store on East Main Street. The clerk at that location reported that a juvenile male entered the business and told him he had been assaulted. The clerk advised communications that he would keep the juvenile male safe until the arrival of responding officers. Upon officer’s arrival, the victim alleged that his mother had struck him over an argument with regard to school work. Due to the injuries, the Ramsey Ambulance Corps was dispatched to evaluate the victim. As the investigation continued, it was determined at Ramsey Police Headquarters that the victim had scars on his back. The victim alleged that he had been hit with an electrical cord from a television set in a previous altercation. The Division of the Youth and Family Services was contacted and responded to Ramsey Police Headquarters. It was determined that the actions of the actor, a 33year-old Ramsey woman, rose to the level of assault and endangering the welfare of a minor child. The children were turned over to the biological father. The borough woman was charged with endangering the welfare of a minor and simple assault. She was remanded to Bergen County Jail. Bail was set at $10,000; no 10 percent. ������������������ Gold Award recipient (continued from page 3) her Gold Award Project recipient. In addition to babysitting and organizing at one of the S.O.S. group homes, Delventhal also worked at the shelter’s annual picnics and holiday events. She and other members of her troop conducted toy drives each year to provide the children at the shelter with holiday gifts. For her Gold Award Project, Delventhal chose to seek donations of money, clothing, baby, and personal care items for the residents of the homes. As a special gift, she made personal care gift package for each resident and restocked the shelter’s shelves with health and beauty inventory. She presented the gift bags at a “Ladies Night Off” dinner party for 40 women and children. She personally shopped, prepared and served dinner and dessert, then cleaned up afterwards, along with assistance from family, Scouts, and troop leaders. Delventhal is currently a freshman at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, PA.
