Set on a homestead, the film follows adult Ned’s return home after an absence of 20 years. The reason for his visit is that his father Bruce (Bryan Brown) is dying and has demanded his return. Along for the ride is Ned’s 21-year-old fiancée Toni (Maeve Dermody), a sexy waitress/aspiring actress who knows nothing about his family and is surprised to learn of the existence of his twin. When Toni happens upon Ned’s teen diary, she is astonished by shocking revelations and flees back to the city, leaving father and son alone together. Past events become clearer to Ned and he realizes that he has wrongly held his father responsible for what happened many years earlier. With help from his younger sister Sally (Rachel Griffiths), Ned sees the truth for the first time and is finally able to begin a series of emotional family reconciliations.
