December 22, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES II & IV • Page 23 (continued from previous page) The Blu-ray release features the original orchestral score by Gottfried Huppert, a wonderfully rich work influenced by Wagner and Strauss. Extras include the 55-minute documentary “Voyage to Metropolis,” which explores the making of the film, its deconstruction, and eventual restoration; extensive production stills and preproduction artwork; and an interview with the curator who discovered the lost footage. “Sherlock Jr. and Three Ages” (Kino on Video), two films presented together, showcase the work of silent comedian Buster Keaton. A contemporary of Charlie Chaplin and Harold Lloyd, Keaton is known mostly for his elaborate sight gags, use of large props for comic effect, and his use of the cinema art not merely to record narrative, but to play with its conventions. “Sherlock Jr.” (1924) offers plenty of fast-paced slapstick and a behind-the-scenes look at the art of filmmaking. Keaton stars as a movie theater projectionist who dreams of becoming a super-detective and, in one amazing sequence, literally steps into the screen to bring his fantasies to life. Special features include several musical ‘Salt’ scores, audio commentary by a film historian, a documentary on the making of the picture, and a visual essay on the movie’s locations. “Three Ages” (1923) is a spoof of D.W. Griffith’s “Intolerance.” Keaton’s film contains several narrative threads tracing man’s primal quest for love in the Stone Age, ancient Rome, and the Jazz Age. Bonuses include an organ score by Lee Erwin, a piano score, and “Man’s Genesis” (1912), a nine-minute excerpt of the D.W. Griffith prehistoric romance that inspired Keaton’s parody. Both films have been mastered in high definition from archival 35-millimeter elements. “Step Up 3” (Walt Disney Home Entertainment), available in a combo pack that includes standard Bluray, Blu-ray 3-D, DVD, and a digital copy, centers on a pair of street dance teams facing off in the World Jam, a high-stakes showdown that is the apex of hip-hop competition. The action revolves around two couples: Moose and Camille (Adam G. Sevani and Alyson Stoner from “Step Up 2” and “Step Up,” respectively) and new characters Luke and Natalie (Rick Malambri, Sharni Vinson). The plot is fairly routine and recycles the familiar tale of underdogs pitted against confident champions. The dancing is wonderful and has been choreographed with 3-D in mind, so flips, extensions, and lifts all occur toward the camera, bringing an increased level of excitement to the dance sequences. The 3-D here can be viewed only on 3D TVs with 3-D Blu-ray capacity. Bonus features are plentiful. There are eight music videos, deleted scenes with introductions by Jon M. Chu, and “Extra Moves,” a music montage featuring the dancers with alternate angles and extra footage. “Turning Green” (Image Entertainment) is about 16year-old James Powers (Donal Gallery), who feels desperately alone. His mother has died and his father has lost interest in his children, so James and his younger brother are sent from the United States to Ireland to live with their three Irish aunts. Lonely and resentful, James is homesick. To raise money to return home, he quits school to do some errands for Bill the Bookie (Alessandro Nivola) and his helper, Bill the Breaker (Timothy Hutton). The film starts well, but meanders, introducing a major narrative thread about two-thirds of the way in. When James is in the bathroom so frequently that his aunts are convinced he has severe bowel problems, they send him to London to see a specialist. There, James sees an opportunity to make some big cash that will finally get him and his brother back to the States. As a comingof-age film, “Turning Green” has its good moments but is ultimately uneven, awkwardly balancing comedy, drama, and pathos. There are no extras in this DVD release.
