Page 2 THE VILLADOM TIMES I, II, III & IV • December 22, 2010 Villadom Happenings Ice and snow removal is the law Motorists are reminded that an amended law that took effect this fall requires that all ice and snow be removed from a vehicle before traveling on New Jersey’s roadways. Failure to do so can result in a citation and fine. Fines for violating the new law begin at $25. If a motorist’s failure to remove ice and snow results in injury or property damage, he or she will face fines ranging from $200 to $1,000. Commercial motor vehicle drivers face fines ranging from $500 to $1,500 for each offense. Classic Film Series features breakout roles Waldwick Public Library hosts screenings of classic films of the past on Thursdays at 2 p.m. A brief introduction setting the film in its historical context will precede each screening. The theme for January is breakout roles. The schedule of screenings is as follows: Jan. 13, “Petrified Forest” starring Humphrey Bogart (1936); Jan. 20, “Blackboard Jungle” starring Sydney Poitier (1955); and Jan. 27, “They Drive by Night” starring Ida Lupino (1940). Support group to meet LifeLines, a supportive and informative resource for prostate cancer patients and their partners in northern Bergen County, will meet Tuesday, Dec. 28 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Church of the Presentation, 271 West Saddle River Road in Upper Saddle River. The group was formed by prostate cancer patients to share information and experience about available treatment and service resources. Crisis center seeks volunteers The YWCA Bergen County Rape Crisis Center is seeking dedicated male and female volunteers who are interested in participating in special events for survivors, fundraising, and office support. The center offers a free 40-hour training program throughout the year to all prospective volunteers interested in becoming an advocate or assisting with community outreach. Anyone interested in learning more about available volunteer opportunities or signing up for training may call (201) 881-1700. Volunteers must obtain an application prior to training. The YWCA Bergen County Rape Crisis Center provides a free and confidential 24-hour hotline (201-487-2227) to survivors of sexual abuse/assault and their family and friends. It is a safe and welcoming place for all survivors, and support is available to anyone who has experienced sexual abuse, assault, or harassment -- whether it happened hours or years ago. The center is a program of the YWCA of Bergen County and is supported through grants from the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs (Division on Women), the New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice, Bergen County Department of Human Services, and the United Way. Book Club to discuss ‘The Bird Artist’ The Waldwick Library Book Club will host a discussion of “The Bird Artist” by Howard Norman on Thursday, Jan. 13 at 7:15 p.m. This unconventional love story set in Newfoundland was a 1994 National Book Award finalist. Copies of the book are available at the library circulation desk. The book club welcomes new members and drop-ins. Waldwick residency is not required.
