Restaurant discount cards available The Mahwah Regional Chamber of Commerce is offering a new restaurant discount card is as part of WinterFest, an eight-week community celebration that is now underway and will wrap up on Jan. 29, 2011. The card entitles holders to a 10 percent discount on food purchases at select chamber member eateries. Participating restaurants include: Brady’s at the Station, Fountainview Restaurant at the Sheraton Mahwah Hotel, Mahwah Bar and Grill, Mason Jar, Moe’s Southwest Grill, Olé Olé Restaurant, Ramsey Golf and Country Club, Restaurant L, Saffron at the Woodcliff Lake Hilton, Windsor Grille Restaurant, and Lounge at the Comfort Inn Conference Center. Some restrictions apply. Cards may be picked up at any of the participating restaurants, or at the Chamber office at 65 Ramapo Valley Road, Suite 211, while supplies last. Board of health to meet The Mahwah Board of Health will meet on Tuesday, Dec. 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the municipal building located at 475 Corporate Drive. ‘Holiday Barbie’ collection presented Celebrate 30 years of Holiday Barbie with Carolynn Whitford, known in the doll collecting community as BarbieZania, on Wednesday, Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. at the Mahwah Public Library. Get a behind the scenes look at Whitford’s personal collection, including dolls from Barbie Fashion Model Collection, haute couture, fantasy, and high fashion dolls by designers including Robert Best, Bob Mackie, Sharon Zuckerman, and Katiana Jimenez. Attendees will get a look at Whitford’s Platinum Label Barbies, some of which are so exclusive only 200 were ever made. This program is free. No registration is necessary. PBA holds Toy Drive The Mahwah Policemen’s Benevolent Association Local 143 will collect toys in memory of retired Det. Lt. Michael Marozin. This year, the toys will benefit military families, Sanzari’s Children’s Hospital, Tomorrow’s Children, Hackensack University Pediatric Center, Bergen County Head Start, Westside Infant and Teen Center, Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, and New Hope. The Mahwah Regional Chamber of Commerce will assist with this collection throughout the ongoing Winterfest Celebration. Boxes will be located at merchants throughout Mahwah, the Veterans Park area, and other towns throughout Bergen County. New unwrapped toys may also be dropped off at the Mahwah Police Station at 221 Franklin Turnpike. Ramapo to host forum on higher education “The Future of Higher Education in New Jersey” will be the topic of a panel discussion at Ramapo College’s Seventh Annual Legacy Society Dinner on Tuesday,
Dec. 7 at 5 p.m. in the Trustees Pavilion at Ramapo College, 505 Ramapo Valley Road in Mahwah. Senators Paul Sarlo (D-Essex, Passaic, Bergen) and Kevin O’Toole (R-Essex, Passaic, Bergen), and Ramapo College President Peter P. Mercer will discuss the upcoming release of the Kean Commission on higher education in New Jersey. In May, Gov. Chris Christie authorized the New Jersey Higher Education Task Force to analyze and identify additional strategies for the state colleges and universities to help contribute to the economic prosperity of the state. The Task Force is headed by the Drew University President and former governor Tom Kean. Senator Sarlo is the deputy majority leader and serves as chairman of the State Budget & Appropriations Committee. Senator O’Toole currently serves on the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee and the Senate State Government Committee. He also serves as a member of the Ramapo College Board of Governors. The Legacy Society recognizes alumni and friends who have created an endowment or who have provided for Ramapo College in their estate plans through wills, life income gifts, retirement plans, life insurance dedications, and other planned gifts. Seniors plan holiday outing The Mahwah Senior Activity Center has planned a Dec. 9 holiday event at Antun’s of Westchester. Located in the heart of Westchester County, Antun’s Victorian mansion and private gardens will provide the perfect backdrop for this event, which includes a show, three-course meal, and transportation. Entertainment will be provided by Pop’ra, starring Vincent Talarico. The singing star will feature the music of La Mancha, Frank Sinatra, Neil Diamond, Tom Jones, Luciano Pavarotti, Andrea Bocelli, and more. Tickets are $61. Auxiliary hosts Holiday Luncheon The Mahwah Branch of The Valley Hospital Auxiliary will host its Annual Holiday Luncheon on Tuesday, Dec. 14 at noon at Bon Giovanni Restaurant in Ramsey. The auxiliary asks members to donate items for military troops serving overseas. This drive is organized by The Mahwah Marine Moms. Requested items include toothbrushes, white socks, and razors. The center’s mission is to educate women on preventing diagnosing and treating heart disease and offer comprehensive heart risk assessment for women. Model railroad exhibit opens The Donald Cooper HO Model Railroad at the Mahwah Museum will be open for special hours on Fridays from 7 to 9 p.m. for four weeks through Dec. 17. This recently expanded layout features a carnival, cityscapes, mountainous terrain, the Great Falls of Paterson, two subway lines, a four-track run-through passenger terminal that is based on Newark’s Pennsylvania Station track plan, a freight bypass around the passenger terminal, some very intricate railroad junctions, and Thomas on his own special track. Located at 201 Franklin Turnpike in Mahwah, the museum is also open Saturdays and Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m. Admis-

Holy Cross sets services Holy Cross Lutheran Church, a member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod located at the corner of West Ramapo Avenue and Route 202 North, has announced its Advent and Christmas services. Every Wednesday in December, Holy Cross will have special worship services at 7:30 p.m. telling the story of the Newborn King with the Stars of Christmas. The services will cover “The Perfect Star,” Creation, “The Fallen Star: Lucifer,” “The Promised Stars: Christians,” and “The Guiding Star: Bethlehem.” All services will include Holy Communion. On Sunday, Dec. 19 at the 10:25 a.m. worship service, the children of Holy Cross will offer the Children’s Christmas Program. They will also tell the story with the Stars of Christmas. After the service, there will be fellowship with a special guest to give each child a special gift. Christmas Eve (Dec. 24) services will be held at 5 and 10 p.m. Both services will feature candlelight and Holy Communion. The early service will be for families, and the later will be a traditional service. There will be a special hymn service on Christmas morning at 10:30 a.m. and it will include Holy Communion. Colonial Christmas Concert set Colonial Balladeers Ridley and Anne Enslow will present a Colonial Christmas Concert at the Ramapo Reformed Church, 100 Island Road in Mahwah, on Sunday, Dec. 12 at 3 p.m. This concert will celebrate the 225th anniversary of the founding of the church in 1785. This event will be co-hosted by the Mahwah Museum Society. The Enslows, dressed in costumes of the 1770s, sing and play a 1776 fiddle and a hammered dulcimer, transporting listeners to the earliest days of the Republic. Refreshments will follow the concert. Parking is free. Tickets are $7.50 for adults and are available at the church, weekdays between 9:30 a.m. and noon, or at the

For additional information, call (201) 529-3075. Local artist exhibits at library Landscape artist Stephanie Cook is exhibiting her pastels and oils at the Mahwah Public Library. The Mahwah resident received a BFA from Boston University and has studied with notable artists Rosalie Nadeau, Richard McKinley, Robert Carsten, David Curtis, Karen Baker, and Joe Hing Lowe. Cook is inspired by the masters of Impressionism and the American landscape realists of the Hudson River School. Cook’s work has been exhibited at the Annual Member Juried Show of the Pastel Society of New Jersey, the Ridgewood Art Institute 30th Regional Open Juried Show, and the Wayne Public Library. She is a member of the Pastel Society of New Jersey, the Vermont Pastel Society, the New Jersey Society of En Plein Air Painters, Passionate about Pastels, Landscape Painters across America and across the Seas, and Seascapes, Dunes, Marine and Coastal Painters. Adult sports programs welcome players Mahwah women over age 21 are invited to participate in Wednesday Night Volleyball. Each Wednesday through June 15, an open game of volleyball will be played from 7 to 9 p.m. Mahwah men are invited to play basketball on Tuesday nights from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. These pick up games are open to Mahwah residents only.
