Page 22 THE VILLADOM TIMES IV • December 8, 2010 Area Hospital Gallery features watercolors and photographs The Valley Hospital Art Gallery will feature the watercolors of Thomas Parkes and the photography of Dr. Robin Gottesman during the month of December. The Valley Hospital Art Gallery is located in the open corridor leading to the Kurth Cottage Café and Gift Shop, where the work may be seen seven days a week. A portion of the sale of all artwork benefits the hospital’s nursing scholarship program. Parkes is an award-winning painter and art director. He received the Jack Richeson Gold Award for Watercolor at the Ridgewood 2005 CAA National Open Exhibition, first prize at the 2008 New Jersey State Show for professional seniors, and the Albert F. Fortunato Award at the 2009 Ridgewood Annual Regional Open Juried Show. He has studied drawing and painting at the Art Students League with Frank Reilly, and watercolor with Mel Stabin A.S. W. and Eli Rosenthal. He has had several one man shows, and has taught watercolor and drawing at the Art School at Old Church in Demarest and drawing at the Art Center of Northern New Jersey in New Milford. Gottesman became interested in photography 15 years ago, but was limited by the time constraints imposed by film photography. With the advent of digital imaging, she became more committed to her hobby. When she retired from practicing medicine two years ago, she decided to turn this passion into a profession and began a new career. She is mostly self-taught and has learned her craft by reading, taking courses, and speaking with other photographers. Gottesman never tires of photographing children and animals, and she pursues her personal passions through sports and nature photography. Currently, she freelances for local newspapers and does portraiture work. The doctor was born in New Jersey, and has lived here most of her life. She graduated from West Orange High School in 1974 and Colgate University in 1982, majoring in biology. Gottesman studied medicine at The Albany Medical College. After deciding to pursue radiology as her specialty, she completed her residency at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in New Jersey. In 1989, she completed a two-year fellowship in neuroradiology at The Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. Gottesman is a board certified radiologist and holds a Certificate of Added Qualification in neuroradiology. The Valley Hospital Art Gallery is located at 223North Van Dien Avenue in Ridgewood. ��
