Page 20 THE VILLADOM TIMES IV • December 1, 2010 abrupt. Neeson, who appears in only one scene, is very good as the ex-con who makes clear to John that there are many things about an escape from prison that must be considered. He has a sad, faraway look, like someone who has lost a good portion of his life behind bars and feels uncomfortable as a free man. Rated PG-13, “The Next Three Days” is at its best when John is making his preparations, balancing his role as father, and becoming hardened by unforeseen circumstances. There is a bit too much of the “Dirty Harry” syndrome going on in the latter part of the film, but by that time, the viewers have gotten on board for the ride. frenzy of terror; centaurs, cupids, unicorns, and a tipsy Bacchus cavorting in Beethoven’s “Pastorale Symphony;” and the lumbering dinosaurs in “The Rite of Spring.” “Fantasia 2000” eliminated some original sequences and added new ones, the best being Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue.” On-screen narrators Steve Martin, Quincy Jones, Bette Midler, James Earl Jones, Angela Lansbury, and Penn & Teller introduce the selections. Bonuses, in keeping with Disney releases, are abundant and include all-new digital restorations of both films, audio commentaries, several behind-the-scenes featurettes, and the animated short “Destino.” “Alarm” (IFC Films) is a suspense thriller. Molly (Ruth Bradley) flees Dublin for the safety of the suburbs and a quieter life after a traumatic experience in the city. Soon, however, Molly realizes everyone else nearby is commuting to work and her lovely neighborhood is actually a veritable ghost town during the day. A new alarm system and even handsome new boyfriend Mal (Aidan Turner) don’t ease Molly’s anxiety as it becomes increasingly unclear whether she is a target. Director Gerard Stembridge builds tension by presenting familiar, ordinarily harmless images and settings with an air of creepiness. Though Molly is content at first, difficulties arise. The local shop owner and the handyman, identical twins (both played by Owen Roe), are unwelcoming, and her elderly Dublin friends start to seem suspicious for one reason or another. Mal begins to behave erratically, takes to drinking too much, and reveals a darker, vulgar side to his character. Bradley shoulders the acting admirably, eliciting audience sympathy. For a low-budget film, “Alarm” is well made and keeps the involved throughout. There are no extras in this bare-bones release. ‘The Next Three Days’ (continued from Entertainment page) Haggis also has the problem of providing a lot of back story in limited time. This works well as he takes viewers fairly quickly through the appeals process, John’s loss of confidence in his lawyer and friend (Daniel Stern), and his perseverance. But an early scene, in which Lara expresses to friends in a restaurant how difficult it is to work for her boss, inadequately sets up a proper motive. When she is arrested in her home without being questioned, it seems too DVDs (continued from Restaurant page) brother comes to town and a scandal comes to light. “Titanic” star Gloria Stuart made her screen debut in this film. Other releases in the Warner Archive Collection include several Tarzan movies; silent films starring the Man of a Thousand Faces, Lon Chaney; Lana Turner melodramas; Bette Davis pictures before she achieved the status of Queen of the Warner’s Lot; and several Clark Gable/Joan Crawford vehicles. The country was on the verge of entering World War II, and the mood of the nation was not exactly attuned to fantasy. The movie was re-released theatrically many times since its original debut, and finally became profitable in the 1970s. “Fantasia” is an episodic collection of animated vignettes inspired by classical music selections. The most famous is “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” starring Mickey Mouse -- a genuine classic. There is also the wonderful “Dance of the Hours,” an unforgettable ballet with crocodiles, ostriches, and hippos; the impressive “Night on Bald Mountain,” with demons and spirits of the dead rising up in a midnight ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20 Aries, you’re thinking all about yourself now, which you’re apt to do.
