The Mahwah police have charged two Rockland County, New York individuals for a strong armed robbery of two individuals in Mahwah that occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Nov. 23. The robbery occurred in a remote area adjacent to the Ramapo River in the vicinity of Jersey Avenue on the Suffern, New York border. The victims, an 18-year-old male from Montebello, New York and a 17-year-old male from Suffern, New York initially reported the incident to the Suffern Police Department, believing they were in Suffern when the robbery occurred. The Suffern police contacted the Mahwah police, realizing the incident had occurred in Mahwah. Mahwah detectives interviewed the victims and began an investigation. The victims reported that they had met an individual several weeks ago at the Palisade Center Mall in Nyack, New York, who was in the company of a mutual friend. This individual called them on Nov. 23 and said he was with their mutual friend and requested they meet him in this remote area off of Jersey Avenue. When the two victims arrived and parked their vehicle, they walked to the area where they were supposed to meet the individual and their friend, but were instead met by the individual and an unknown black male. Their mutual friend was not present. The unknown male then struck the 17-year-old victim in the face, causing him to fall to the ground incapacitated. The individual who had contacted the victims struck the 18year-old victim and began choking him, then yelled for his accomplice to get the victims’ money. The actors took the victims’ wallets and the 18-year-old victim’s cell phone. Further investigation identified the one suspect as an 18year-old resident of Nanuet, New York. He was located and arrested by detectives and charged with robbery and theft. His bail was set at $75,000, no 10 percent. He was later released after bail. The black male was identified as a 19-year-old from South Nyack, New York. Bergen County Superior Court Judge Silebi issued criminal complaints and a warrant for his arrest. Bail was set at $150,000. On Nov. 24 at 4:06 a.m., Officers Jonathan Weber and Daniel Stewart stopped a 1998 Ford Crown Victoria on Route 17 South and the West Ramapo Avenue overpass for motor vehicle violations. The driver initially provided Officer Weber with a false name and information regarding his identity. Further investigation identified him as a 25year-old from Winter Park, Florida, who was found to be a wanted fugitive in Orange County, Florida for robbery and probation violations. He was placed under arrest by Officer
Weber and was discovered to be in possession of a butterfly knife. Located in the vehicle was $6,850 in counterfeit currency, a bag with four digital scales, and a large amount of small clear plastic bags. The driver was charged with several motor vehicle summonses and with criminal charges for providing false information and hindering apprehension, possession of a weapon, possession of drug paraphernalia, and money laundering. He is being remanded to the Bergen County Jail while he awaits extradition to Florida. The counterfeiting investigation is ongoing.
At 10:18 p.m. on Nov. 7, Patrolman Marc Shingelo was patrolling the Interstate Shopping Center parking lot when he observed a suspicious vehicle. An investigation of the occupant revealed he was in possession of a controlled dangerous substance. A 22-year-old Mahwah man was arrested. On Nov. 14 at 1:58 a.m., Patrolman Bryan Arsi conducted a motor vehicle stop for a traffic violation. An odor of an

alcoholic beverage was detected from the driver. At the conclusion of field sobriety testing, a 23-year-old Mawhah man was arrested for driving while intoxicated. On Nov. 15 at 1:15 a.m., Patrolman Casey Hines conducted a motor vehicle stop for an equipment violation. During the stop it was determined that the driver, a 20year-old Ramsey man was in possession of a controlled dangerous substance and the driver was arrested. Part I violent and non-violent tracked crimes are down, the reality is that our agency is seeing increases in other areas, as well as in general calls for service.” Notwithstanding Batelli’s cautionary position, Dow said the UCR drop in the statewide crime rate “is testimony to the skill and dedication of the men and women of our law enforcement community.” Dow added that, while she is encouraged by the downward trend in the overall crime index and violent crime, she emphasized that “law enforcement will have to continue to work even harder and smarter, especially during this economic crisis facing our state and nation.”

(continued from page 3) could have 75 acts of criminal mischief, 50 simple assaults, and 20 incidents of fraud, but unless an arrest is made, it is not reported through the UCR system, and even if an arrest is made, it does not have any impact on the violent or nonviolent crime rates that are reported by the media. “Essentially what I’m saying is the UCR statistics can be very misleading unless you understand the data that is collected and how it is analyzed.
