The Mahwah Regional Chamber of Commerce will honor Lawrence Inserra Jr. as Humanitarian of the Year at the Chamber’s 19th Annual Golf Outing and Dinner on Sept. 13. A portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit Inserra’s chosen charity, the John Theurer Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center. The honoree is president of Inserra Supermarkets, Inc., a large supermarket chain, which operates ShopRite stores throughout New Jersey and New York. Born in Newark and raised in Rutherford, Inserra worked in the family ShopRite business while he was attending high school. He then attended Lehigh University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business and economics. In addition to his family business accomplishments, Inserra provides leadership to a number of communities and other business organizations. He is a member of the board of directors of the Wakefern Food Corporation, the Greater

Alliance Federal Credit Union, the Commerce and Industry Association of New Jersey, the Hackensack University Medical Center, the Hackensack Economic Development Commission, and the Mahwah Schools Foundation. He also serves as a member of the board of trustees for the Community Resource Council, the Community Blood Services Foundation, and the Hackensack University Medical Center Foundation. “We will sell out this event and raise even more than the $12,500 donated to HUMC last year because we know how important this organization is to everyone in the region, especially to our honoree,” said Stu Rosenberg, event chairman and owner of Beverly Hills Hand Car Wash & Detailing. The John Theurer Cancer Center at HUMC is one of the most comprehensive cancer programs in the country and is one of the top eight in the nation in patient volume. Many
people who live near other nationally recognized cancer programs go to HUMC for the extraordinary physicians and nurses, and for their commitment to research and participation in clinical trials that give patients unsurpassed access to cutting-edge treatments. This year’s Golf Outing will return to the prestigious Tuxedo Club in Tuxedo, New York. The event is open to all interested golfers; Chamber membership is not required. Those who do not golf are invited to join the group for cocktails and dinner (jackets required) at the elegant Clubhouse on the Lake from 5 to 8 p.m. The awards ceremony will take place during dinner. Event sponsors, journal ads, auction items, and volunteers are needed. Pre-registration for all or part of the event is required, and can be made online at www.mahwah.com. Inserra Supermarkets was founded in 1954 by Lawrence Inserra Jr.’s grandfather, Patsy Inserra. The first store was located in Lyndhurst. Although the original store no longer exists, the new ShopRite of Lyndhurst is still referred to as “Patsy’s.” Under the entrepreneurial guidance of Lawrence Inserra, the supermarket chain grew to eight stores by 1980, and a banner year was enjoyed in 1981 with growth to 14 stores. From 1982 to the present, the chain has continued to add stores. Today, Inserra Supermarkets operates a total of 21 ultra-modern stores. “Proud to be a family business serving families,” the Inserra family stores have become an integral part of the fabric of each of the communities where they are located. Every generation of Inserras has built upon Patsy’s vision of providing the highest quality products at reasonable prices. Founded in 1957, the Mahwah Regional Chamber of Commerce is a dynamic organization of more than 500 businesses, representing nearly 100 communities in the region. The Chamber’s membership includes retail, professional, service, and corporate businesses, both large and small. Its primary objective is to advance the general welfare of the greater Mahwah region so that its citizens and its business community may prosper. Particular attention and emphasis is given to the business, social, civic, cultural, and educational interests of the region. For additional information, call the Chamber office at (201) 529-5566.

The Mahwah Marlins Dive team has once again completed a fantastic summer league season and has successfully continued its tradition of excellence shown throughout the years. The team consists of 31 divers ranging in age from six to 14 and is led by coaches Kate Kearney and Jenny Ullman. The season opened with an away meet versus the Paramus Pacers. The Marlins quickly adjusted to the foreign boards and left the pool that night with a victory. The momentum from this first win led the Marlins to finish the dual meet season with a record of 4-1-1. The township athletes competed with enthusiasm throughout the season and placed second in the League Championships on July 27 at the Saddle River Valley pool. The following week (Aug. 2 and 3), the New Jersey Pool Manager’s Association held its Dive Championships. Coach Kate brought a team of six Mahwah divers from various age groups to individually represent the Mahwah Marlins Dive Team. Those divers included Alexis Castro, Eleni Konstantellis, Michael Kearney, Jillian Fox, Jenna Braun, and Cy Trojan. On Aug. 2, Castro, Konstantellis, Kearney, and Fox competed for the NJPMA Champion title at the Hasbrouck Heights Swim Club. M. Kearney and J. Fox both became 2010 NJPMA Dive Champions for their age groups. Braun and Trojan competed on Aug. 3 at the Closter Swim Club. Both Braun and Trojan dove beautifully and both received the title of 2010 NJPMA Dive Champion. The coaching staff is very proud of all the hard work their athletes put into this season and cannot wait to see everyone for the 2011 summer season.
