West Point football trip planned The Ramsey Recreation Commission is sponsoring an Oct. 2 trip to West Point, rain or shine, for the Army vs. Temple football game. No transportation will be provided. The game will begin at noon. Recreation Commissioner Deane Wittmann is in charge of the tailgate for both brunch and lunch. The cost per person is $35 and includes the game ticket and the tailgate; an additional charge of $10 per car is for reserved parking. A limited number of tickets are available. Senior picnic, fall programs set The Annual Ramsey Seniors Picnic will be held at the Ramsey Pool on Wednesday, Sept. 15 at noon. All Ramsey residents over the age of 60 are welcome to attend. Sign up at the borough hall. The price of $5 includes hot dogs, hamburgers, potato salad, coleslaw, beverages, and dessert. Picnic tables are available. Attendees are encouraged to bring folding chairs. A new eight-week course in Tai Chi will begin Sept. 2, at 1 p.m. The cost is $10. Sign up at borough hall. The course will run through Oct. 28. Cut-a-thon to benefit juvenile diabetes A Cut-a-thon to benefit juvenile diabetes will be held Sept. 1 from 12:30 to 6 p.m. at Richard’s Hair Salon, 75 West Main Street in Ramsey. Crestwood Lake worship service offered The Ramsey First Presbyterian Church and Highlands Presbyterian Church of Allendale will offer a joint worship service at Crestwood Lake Park in Allendale on Aug. 29 at 10 a.m. After the service, there will be a pot luck picnic and fellowship. Children’s bowling program set Registration is underway for the children’s bowling program sponsored the Ramsey Recreation Commission.
The program, which is open to children in kindergarten through eighth grade, meets on Fridays beginning Sept. 17 at Holiday Bowl in Oakland. The cost is $65 per participant. Register for Ramsey Day Dog Show The Eleventh Annual Ramsey Day Dog Show, sponsored by the Ramsey Recreation Commission, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 11 at the municipal pool located on East Oak Street, at 1 p.m. Rain date is Sept. 12. New this year is a leash-led obstacle course, which promises to add lots of fun to the event. In addition to the obstacle course, designed by Recreation Commissioner John Sebastian, dogs will be judged in seven categories. The registration fee is $5 per category per dog, and preregistration is suggested. Registration forms are available at the Ramsey Municipal Building at 33 North Central Avenue, the public library, post office, and municipal pool, or at www.ramseynj.com. Scholarship applications available Applications for the Edward C. Syder Scholarship Foundation for the 2010 school year are now available. Eligible applicants must be residents of Ramsey who have completed their freshman year of college. Qualified applicants for these scholarship awards must demonstrate meritorious academic accomplishment, contribution to their college community, and must be of high personal character. College or graduate students are invited to write to the Edward C. Syder Scholarship Committee, c/o Donald C. Ohnegian, Esq., 88 West Main Street, Ramsey, New Jersey 07446, or call (201) 327-7000 for an application. Applicants may be graduate or undergraduate students. Juniors welcome new members The Junior Woman’s Club of Ramsey will resume its monthly meetings on Thursday, Sept. 9 at 7:30 p.m. Meetings are held at the Ramsey Ambulance Corps building at 41 South Island Avenue. New members welcome. The group, which meets on the second Thursday of the month, serves and supports the community through volunteering, fundraising, and social events. at Seasons in Washington Township. The evening will include food stations, hors d’oeuvres, an open bar, baskets filled with prizes, and special contests. Seniors plan theater trip The Ramsey Seniors have planned a bus trip into New York City to see the Broadway show “Billy Elliot” on Sept. 8. This show earned the Tony Award for Best Musical. Watch Billy as he stumbles out of the boxing ring and into a ballet class, discovering a surprising talent that inspires his family and his entire community, changing his life forever. Signup has begun at borough hall. Checks may be made payable to Ramsey Recreation. This event is open to Ramsey senior citizens; and proof of residency is required. The cost is $90 per person and includes transportation, lunch at Broadway Joe’s, and theater ticket. Farmers market institutes Pay it Forward The Ramsey Farmers Market is reaching out to others who are less fortunate with its Pay it Forward program. Visitors to the market bring non-perishable items each Sunday, and market vendors are donating fresh vegetables and fruits, breads, and freshly ground coffee to the Center for Food Action in Mahwah. The market is open Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Main Street train station through Oct. 31, rain or shine.

(continued from page 9) Mayor Richard Martel pointed out that, if the township did not participate in the road widening project, the county would scale that project back to just upgrade the traffic signal system and then the potential for widening that intersection in the future would be lost. “It’s our opportunity to take advantage of the widening, so keep that in mind,” he told the council. “The cost may be just in the sidewalks and light posts that we require others to install, and they could be done at one time and go a long way to beautify that part of our downtown.” Roth asked Kelly to make sure that all affected businesses in the area are notified of the road widening.
