Mahwah
Late last week, a group of northern New Jersey residents set out for Escape to the Cape: A Run to Remember. This twoday expedition along the East Coast raises funds to fight Alzheimer’s disease. The event is a nonstop running and biking relay. The local team set out from Mahwah and will end up in Harwichport, Massachusetts. The team set out to raise awareness and funds that will be donated to a variety of organizations that aim to prevention, treat, and cure Alzheimer’s. Created in 2000 by Jeff Morris, as his grandmother, Anne McKay, lay debilitated from the disease, the initial effort raised $10,000, which was earmarked for research and given to the Alzheimer’s Association in her name. Ten years later, Morris created a new version of the event commemorating his grandmother’s fight and striving to beat the donations and raise more awareness. The duathalon, which spans approximately 300 miles, began in Mahwah, and passes through towns in New York’s Westchester County. Participants are running

and biking 30 miles over five relay legs through a variety of locations in Connecticut, including New Haven, New London, and Old Mystic. Plans called for the caravan to enter Rhode Island last Friday, passing through Newport and Portsmouth. The team was set to enter Massachusetts for the final stage of the tour Saturday afternoon. “Beyond being inspired by the obvious physical challenge, our main purpose is to raise awareness and, more importantly, money that we can donate to research-based organizations whose mission it is to prevent, treat, and cure Alzheimer’s disease,” says Morris. “I hope our effort inspires others to get involved: to donate, spread the word, or even provide inspirational moral support… Anything that gets people taking about a cure is what is most important to us.” Donations may be submitted via active. com and checks made out to Escape to the Cape may be sent to 75 Trommel Drive, Mahwah, NJ 07430. More information about Escape to the Cape is available on Facebook and on Twitter @Escape2Cape.
Firefighters offer support
The brotherhood of firefighters was evident at the recent ‘Wing Night’ held at Mahwah Fire Station #2. The purpose of the event was to support the family of Mahwah’s Departmental Fire Chief Tim Malone. Chief Malone’s son, Timmy, is battling cancer. Over 100 fellow firefighters showed up in an overwhelming show of support for the Malone family. Pictured are Fire Chief Tim Malone, his wife Maryanne, their son Timmy, and Mahwah Fire Company #2 President Jim Krause, who presented a check to the family to help with their medical expenses.
