Church addresses addiction On Aug. 22, the Church of the Immaculate Conception, in conjunction with Families Anonymous of Mahwah/ Ramsey, will hold a 4 p.m. service for the families of, and those suffering from, alcohol or drug addiction. Families Anonymous, a national organization of concerned relatives and friends whose lives have been adversely affected by a loved one’s addiction to alcohol or drugs, meets at 7:30 p.m. every Wednesday, at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, 900 Darlington Avenue, Mahwah. Chamber plans networking breakfast The Mahwah Regional Chamber of Commerce will hold a networking breakfast on Wednesday, Aug. 18 from 8 to 10 a.m. at the Kingsbridge Diner, 44 Franklin Turnpike, Mahwah. Attendees may network with area business owners while having a breakfast of choice. New members will offer a brief introduction to their business. The cost is $25 for Chamber members and $40 for nonmembers. Prepaid registration is required. An additional $5 processing fee will be charged the day of event. After-hours business card exchange set The Mahwah Regional Chamber of Commerce will hold a business card exchange for members and non-members on Wednesday, Aug. 25, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Capital One Bank, 13400 Route 17 North, Ramsey. Book groups discuss Gold novel The Evening Book Discussion group at the Mahwah Public Library will discuss Glen David Gold’s “Carter Beats the Devil.” On Aug. 25 at 7 p.m. The Mahwah Public Library is located at 100 Ridge Road. ‘Sound Doctrine’ comes to church The Church of the Immaculate Conception in Mahwah will host “Sound Doctrine,” a program that explores themes in the music of contemporary musicians. “Sound Doctrine” will meet on Aug. 19 at 8 p.m., at the Mahwah Bar and Grill, 2 Island Road, Mahwah. Seniors invited to picnic at pool The Mahwah Senior Picnic will be held under the shade structures and on the patio of the Mahwah Municipal Pool on Thursday, Aug. 19 beginning at noon. Lifeguards and pool staff will be on hand to serve a lunch of hot dogs, potato salad, chips, ice cream, fruit, and beverages. Entertainment will be provided. Attendees are encouraged to bring bathing suits and enjoy the pool for the afternoon. After the picnic, seniors are invited to dance. In the event of rain, the picnic will be held Aug. 20. Free emergency response training offered Community Emergency Response Team training will be offered at the Bergen Law and Public Safety Institute in Mahwah starting Wednesday, Sept. 29 from 7 to 9 p.m. The training provides residents with basic skills and information on what to do before, during, and after a disaster to aid themselves, their family, and their community. There is no cost to participate in the CERT training. The program will run for nine Wednesday nights. At the completion of the program, basic CERT safety equipment will be issued to each participant. Class size is limited, so immediate registration is encouraged to ensure a place in this class.

Mahwah Community Emergency Response Team is made up of volunteer residents who are trained to support professional first responders (police, fire, EMTs, et. al.) in all types of emergency situations while serving the community in other ways during normal times. CERT is part of a national program and is organized locally under the auspices of the Mahwah Office of Emergency Management. Film series features blockbusters During the month of August, the Mahwah Public Library Film Series will feature the blockbusters that light up movie screens every summer. The film series airs on Thursdays at 1:30 p.m. The schedule of screenings follows: “Terminator Salvation” on Aug. 19; and “Monsters vs. Aliens” on Aug. 26.
These films are free. The library will provide popcorn and drinks. No tickets are necessary. The library is located at 100 Ridge Road. Call (201) 529READ for more information. Free clothing available The Clothing Closet Ministry at the Ramapo Reformed Church has free clothing available. Seasonal items for everyone from infants through adults are currently in stock. Choose from a variety of T-shirts, shorts, jeans, shirts, blouses, dresses, sneakers, shoes, and more. For a referral, call the Mahwah Township Department of Human Services at (201) 529- 5757. Participants need not be Mahwah residents. An appointment will be made with volunteers of the Clothing Closet. The Clothing Closet is located at the rear of the Ramapo Reformed Church’s education building at the corner of Island Road and West Ramapo Avenue in Mahwah. Donations of seasonal clothing are accepted Wednesday mornings from 9:30 a.m. to noon.

Ready, Set, Kindergarten is a three day workshop designed to promote
social and emotional competencies in pre-school aged children. The program is intended to prepare children entering Kindergarten in the fall 2010.
During this workshop children will begin to develop the ability to:
Listen to stories without interrupting Pay attention for short periods of time to adult-directed tasks Begin to share with others Participate in group activities Start to follow rules Control physical impulses and keep a still body Begin to communicate feelings in words Participate in other people’s games Be able to get adult attention without whining, clinging, crying, screaming, or throwing things Separate from parents without too much distress after a get-acquainted time
