Page 10 THE VILLADOM TIMES IV • August 18, 2010 Mahwah ‘Alex Masket: A View with a Room’ to open at gallery On Sept. 1, “Alex Masket: A View with a Room” will open in the Kresge Gallery in the Berrie Center at Ramapo College of New Jersey. This solo exhibit is being presented in recognition of Disabilities Awareness Month and is cosponsored by the Office of Specialized Services. Masket, 23, is severely autistic and entirely self-taught. His work emphasizes his uninhibited, bold use of color and his facility with unconventional media. Masket’s intricately composed and beautifully balanced work is dominated by color and form. An important component of the display at Ramapo is a recreation of the artist’s room. The exhibition incorporates a variety of media, ranging from paint and vinyl stickers to colored duct tape. Masket’s work has been receiving increasing acclaim and was featured in the May/June 2010 issue of Utne Reader and on the cover of the arts magazine Esopus, and in Rutgers Magazine and Rutgers’ Byrne Seminars Course Catalogue. His exhibitions have included “Masket” at One Gallery in Newark, and various solo and group exhibitions including the Arts Council of Princeton, and the Newark Arts Council’s “Open Doors.” Numerous upcoming exhibition projects include the Riverfront Art Gallery in Yonkers, New York and the Regina A. Quick Arts Center at Saint Bonaventure University. A reception and talk by the artist’s mother, Elaine Masket, and filmmaker Dennis Connors will be held Oct. 6 at 5 p.m. in the Sharp Auditorium. Connors’ award-winning documentary film “Breaking Boundaries: The Art of Alex Masket” will be shown and discussed, followed by a gallery reception. Gallery hours are Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 1 through 5 p.m. and Wednesdays, 1 through 7 p.m. Special Sunday hours: Sunday, Oct. 3 only, 1 through 5 p.m. The exhibit will continue through Oct. 6.
