Mahwah August 11, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES IV • Page 7 Township’s public schools eligible for capital grants by Frank J. McMahon The Mahwah School District is one of 177 districts the New Jersey Department of Education has identified as eligible for state grants toward the cost of capital maintenance and construction projects. The school district is eligible for $558,811 in state grants toward the cost of multiple projects, including the removal and replacement of boilers at the Mahwah High School. At Betsy Ross Elementary School, grant money could be used for the removal and replacement of mechanical equipment in the original section of the building, the removal and replacement of the existing storefront system in the hallway and kindergarten classrooms, and the repair of roof drain- age problems. Funds could also be dedicated to the removal and replacement of mechanical equipment in the original section of the George Washington School. The grants represent about 40 percent of the cost of the capital projects and are contingent upon voter or budget approval of the remaining cost to local school districts. The school district would have to pay the balance of $838,216 toward the total cost of the capital projects. Richard Vespucci of the NJDOE Public Information Office advised that could be done by either using money in the school district’s capital reserve account or by holding a referendum to get voter support for selling bonds to obtain the money and paying those bonds off over a 30-year period. “Efficient, up-to-date school facilities are a priority of this administration and part of ensuring New Jersey (continued on page 11) Thunderbirds win tournament The 14U Blue Mahwah Thunderbirds baseball team recently won the town all-star division championship in the Bergen County Charity Classic Memorial Day Tournament.
