August 11, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES I, II, III & IV • Page 19 Sitcom stars take on the silver screen their weekly date night, but even that has come to be predictable. When they learn their close friends (Mark Ruffalo, Kristen Wiig) are divorcing because they have become more “perfect roommates” than a married couple, Phil and Claire decide to spice things up. They go to a fancy restaurant without a reservation, surreptitiously check the reservation list, give the head waiter a name on that list, and are immediately seated. As luck would have it, the couple whose name they used is on the run from the mob because they have a flash drive containing evidence that can send the city’s top crime boss (Ray Liotta) to jail. The mob is now out to get Phil and Claire. “Date Night” has a stale formula structure with a few high points, including a surreal running gag involving a former client of Claire’s (Mark Wahlberg) whose expertise in special ops helps them out of some tough spots. Wahlberg nicely spoofs his tough guy image and plays his part without overdoing it, something Fey and Carell should learn to do. Overall, however, the movie’s gags fall flat almost as often as they land. Carell and Fey do their best with the material, infusing maximum energy, but they don’t click as a romantic couple. It’s an uphill battle for them as they try to milk laughs from tepid material. “Date Night” is available on both Bluray and DVD. Blu-ray extras include audio commentary with the director, gag reel, extended car chase scene, deleted scenes, camera tests with Carell and Fey, (continued on Crossword page) Claire and Phil Foster (Tina Fey, Steve Carell) find their evening out is not what they expected in ‘Date Night.’ by Dennis Seuling “Date Night” (20th Century-Fox Home Entertainment) features the stars of the wittiest sitcoms on TV: Tina Fey (“30 Rock”) and Steve Carell (“The Office”). Putting these two together in a feature film comedy sounds like a good idea, but though “Date Night” has some funny moments, it does not rise to the comedy level of either of the stars’ TV shows. Phil and Claire Foster are a married couple with two kids who feel their relationship has fallen into a rut.
