Borough officials mull use of open space grant
Midland Park’s borough officials are currently considering a new use for the borough’s $100,214 grant from the Bergen County Open Space and Recreation Trust Fund, which the borough received in May. The funds were originally earmarked for the construction of a canopy to cover one of the recently constructed basketball courts adjacent to the DePhillips Center. That project, however, drew an unfavorable reaction from neighbors, leaving the borough to rethink the future use of the grant and the matching funds from the borough, which together will total $200,428. The money must still be used for the Dairy Street Recreation Complex, and Field Manager Dave Lancaster and Superintendent of Public Works Rudy Gnehm recently made several recommendations of possible field upgrades to Borough Administrator Michelle Dugan. One of the suggestions concerns the installation of a four-foot high fence around the perimeter of Vander Meer Field. That fence, Gnehm and Lancaster said, would tie into the existing fences along the first and third base lines. “The new football lights have a large cement base and along with the telephone poles could pose a concern for a player running into either of them,” they advised Dugan in a memo, adding that they are awaiting a price quote from a local fence company. An additional suggestion involves an upgrade of the existing sprinkler system. That project would involve the installation of a booster pump, the addition of another sprinkling zone that would water a new flower bed at Junior Field, and a means to make the system remote controllable. Gnehm and Lancaster also suggested the replacement of the existing bleachers at Vander Meer Field with a smaller aluminum set, the installation of a small shed or storage facility for baseball, and a timer for the sprinkler system. The list of proposals also included recommendations for the Junior Field. The first suggestion for that area involves the extension of the height of the existing backstop to help contain foul balls. “Since we moved the home plates to accommodate girls’ softball, there have been a load of foul balls on the lower field,” they noted. This proposal also includes the removal of the lip on the infield grass. The other suggestion for the Junior Field involves the replacement of the right field retaining wall and the removal of the bushes in that area. The bushes would be re-landscaped with plantings that require less attention. No cost estimates were available for these five proposals at press time. However, both men said it might be possible to carry out all five recommendations. Gnehm noted, for example, that the sprinkler work would not be an expensive undertaking. He added that no price estimates were likely to become available until an engineer reviews the proposals. The suggestions will now be reviewed by the borough council.
