Ramsey April 7, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES IV • Page 7 The celebrated University of Notre Dame Concert Band will be joined by the Ridgewood Concert Band and New York Philharmonic Principal Trumpeter Philip Smith for a special evening of celebrated band repertoire at Don Bosco Prep’s De Sales Auditorium in Ramsey. The May 10 performance has been set for 7:30 p.m. “We are so excited to bring such worldclass talent to northern New Jersey,” said Don Bosco Concert Director Toni Bilotti Cecere. “It will surely be an inspirational evening of concert band music for not only members of local bands, but also something that the entire family can enjoy.” Dating back to 1846, the University of Notre Dame Band is in its 164th year. The oldest college band in continuous existence in the United States, the University of Notre Dame Band was declared a “Land- Notre Dame, Ridgewood concert bands to perform mark of American Music,” by the National Music Council, the Indiana Music Educators Association, and the U.S. Bicentennial Commission. The Notre Dame Band is an active organization and has performed around the country and the world for countless concerts, Masses, graduations, civic functions, bowl games, parades, athletic contests, and many national championships. Under the direction of Director of Bands and Professor of Music Kenneth W. Dye, the University of Notre Dame Band will grace the auditorium at Don Bosco with its expert musicianship and dynamic energy. The Ridgewood Concert Band, under the direction of Chris Wiljelm, will also perform at this concert. Smith, who will accompany the Ridgewood Concert Band, has appeared regularly as an internationally renowned soloist, recitalist, chamber orchestra member, and trumpet clinician. He has been featured in more than 75 performances under celebrated conductors such as Zubin Mehta, Kurt Masur, Leonard Bernstein, and Erich Leinsdorf. He has played with numerous symphonies and wind ensembles, including The United States “President’s Own” Marine Band. In the March 2006 issue of InTune Magazine, Smith was included in an article entitled “Anatomy of a Trumpet: Trumpeters of Note.” That article also paid tribute to great trumpeters including Louis Armstrong, Dizzie Gillespie, Miles Davis, and Wynton Marsalis.
