Ramsey Cleanup Day set The Ramsey Environmental Commission’s annual Cleanup Day will be April 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Volunteers are needed to assist in the cleanup of litter that accumulated over the winter. Gloves, rakes, and brooms will be provided. Sign up for this program the day of the event at the Ramsey Rescue building across from Ramsey High School. All are welcome. The rain date will be April 18. Scheuermann named to Dean’s List Caitlyn Scheuermann of Ramsey has been named to the Dean’s List at Berkeley College in Paramus for the fall 2009 quarter. Berkeley students who achieve a grade point average of 3.5 or better with a minimum of 12 academic credits qualify for the Dean’s List. Project Healthy Bones to begin Orientation for Project Healthy Bones, a new initiative
sponsored by the Ramsey Board of Health and Hackensack University Medical Center’s Health Awareness Regional Program, will be held April 13. The program will be held at 10 a.m. at the Ramsey Senior Center at Finch Park. This 24-week exercise and educational program is designed for older adults who have osteoporosis or are at risk for osteoporosis. Exercises are targeted to improve strength, balance, and flexibility. The educational component stresses the importance of exercise, nutrition, safety, drug therapy, and lifestyle factors related to osteoporosis. Classes will be conducted by professionals from Hackensack University Medical Center’s HARP program. Registration is required and will take place during the orientation. Project Healthy Bones classes are free, but space is limited. Future classes will be held at the Senior Center on Tuesday from 10 to 11 a.m. ESL Tutor Training planned Training for English as a Second Language tutors will be held on April 10, 17, 24 and May 8 from 9 a.m. to noon at Saint John’s Memorial Episcopal Church, on the corner of Main Street and Franklin Turnpike in Ramsey. The training series will prepare adult volunteers to teach adults who
are in need of spoken English skills. Volunteer tutors do not need to know a language other than English. Pre-registration is required. Call Emmy Bledsoe at (201) 825-0474.

UNICO presents Texas Hold’em Tournament On May 7, the Greater Ramsey Chapter of UNICO National will hold a charity poker tournament in Ramsey that will offer entries into World Series of Poker events in Las Vegas, Nevada, as prizes for every player who makes the final table. Each prize of an entry into a WSOP event comes with a Visa gift card to help pay expenses for the trip to Las Vegas. Tournament buy-in is $250 ($300 after April 30), for which a player gets $5,000 in chips. Those who “bust out” early and want a chance for a comeback may avail themselves of “re-buys,” which will be offered at $150 during the first 90 minutes of play. Professional dealers will make sure all play proceeds quickly and according to the rules. A gourmet Italian buffet dinner and beer, wine, and soft drinks are included in the buy-in price. Famous-name coffee and Italian pastries top off the meal. Non-playing guests are invited to partake in the food and fun for $50. The event will be held Friday, May 7 at the Adorno Fathers Banquet Hall, 575 Darlington Avenue. Dinner will start at 6:30 p.m., and the tournament will begin promptly at 8 p.m. Advance registration is required. All food items will be donated to local food pantries. Kid friendly donation items suggested are pasta and pasta sauce, boxed macaroni and cheese, soups, baked beans, canned fruit, boxed potatoes, pancake mix and syrup, coffee, jelly, 100% fruit juice (bottles or boxes), cereal, and healthy individual snack items for lunch boxes, plus toothpaste and toothbrushes.
