April 28, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES II, III & IV • Page 21 New superhero comedy rethinks familiar genre by Dennis Seuling When I saw the theatrical trailer for “Kick-Ass,” I thought it was a dopey slapstick movie about loopy teenagers playing superheroes. The actual feature is anything but a children’s flick. It’s a hard-edged, violent, R-rated send-up of the superhero genre -- hardly a wise choice for parents bringing little ones to the multiplex. Aaron Johnson and Chloe Grace Moretz play two self-anointed superheroes. He is a comic book geek who wonders why real folks do not emerge from the anonymity of the masses to become superheroes. So he buys a green and yellow outfit that looks like a cross between a ski suit and a low-budget sci-fi film getup, wears it to school under his clothes, and sets out to right whatever wrongs he encounters. Unfortunately, his first confrontation with bad guys turns out the worse for Dave but, undeterred, he forges forward, taking on a gang of muggers by himself.
