Janisheski Budget defeat (continued from page 3) teacher pay. But it (the budget defeat) is not going to impact directly on teacher pay. The school board does not have the prerogative of unilaterally invoking a pay freeze -- so, depending on what gets cut (by the township council) it really will impact kids.” He explained that if money is taken out of the salary portion of the budget, the board could not circumvent the collective bargaining process and, if the Mahwah Education Association, which represents the teachers, does not agree to a salary freeze, then more teachers would have to be let go. That could potentially mean larger class sizes cuts in programs. “That’s the only place to go,” he emphasized. Montesano pointed out, however, that the budget defeat was about four percent and not a “landslide.” He said he hopes that will be a factor in the council’s deliberation about further cuts in the budget. “Had it been a landslide or a mandate…then the council would be hard pressed not to make significant cuts,” he said. Once the school district has provided the council with all of its budget information, the council has until May 19 to determine in consultation with the school board, what changes, if any, should and could be made to the budget to permit the school district to provide a thorough and efficient education, according to Michael Yaple, the public affairs officer for the New Jersey School Boards Association. If an agreement is reached, the new tax levy would be submitted to the Bergen County Superintendent of Schools for approval and then certified by the Bergen County Board of Taxation. If an agreement is not reached between the council and the school board, the county superintendent would attempt to reach a resolution, but the school board may also appeal the proposed budget changes to the state’s commissioner of education. In this election, three incumbent board members were reelected to new three-year terms on the school board. Suzanne Curry, Douglas D’Angelo, and Charles “Chuck” Saldarini ran unopposed.
