I, II, III & IV • April 21, 2010 However, Karin and married maestro Zoltan Szanto (Niels Arestrup) soon begin a passionate affair, throwing the opera scene into a frenzy. Close plays her role broadly in the style of classic ‘30s screwball comedy, and the movie has an abundance of hilarious moments. “Surviving Picasso” (1996) focuses on another kind of artist, as Academy Award-winner Anthony Hopkins breathes life into the acclaimed painter in a film that tells its story from the point of view of Picasso’s longtime mistress (Natascha McElhone) and mother of his two children. Titles in the Warner Archive Collection can only be ordered online. They are not available in stores. For a complete list of films, which are available in the DVD format only, go to www.wbshop.com. All films in the Warner Archive Collection have no extras. “44 Inch Chest” (Image Entertainment) is a thriller in which Colin Diamond (Ray Winstone, “The Departed”) has just learned of the infidelity of his wife (Joanne Whalley). This has left him anxious, desperate, and psychologically destroyed. With the help of his friends, a colorful crew of ex-thugs and thug wannabes, he kidnaps his wife’s lover. Soon, a kangaroo court is in session, and the life of “Loverboy” (Melvil Poupaud) hangs in the balance. There is a good deal of dialogue in “44 Inch Chest,” but it’s by the writers of “Sexy Beast” and is delivered by a collection of first-rate actors: Winstone, Ian McShane, John Hurt, and Tom Wilkinson. The British movie lacks Hollywood gloss, but that only makes it stand out as an original. Blu-ray and DVD extras include audio commentary by, and interview with, director Malcolm Venville, a making-of featurette, and theatrical trailer. “Falcon Crest: The Complete First Season” (Warner Home Video) is the latest entry of popular TV shows on DVD. Created by Earl Hamner of “The Waltons” fame, the prime time TV soap opera ran from 1981 to 1990. Set in the fictional city of Tuscany Valley, it focuses on two wealthy wine families: the Channings, headed by corrupt matriarch Angela Channing (Jane Wyman), and their rivals, the Giobertis. Costars include Robert Foxworth as Chase Gioberti, Angela’s upstanding nephew and rival, and Lorenzo Lamas as Lance Cumson, Angela’s scheming playboy grandson. “Falcon Crest” was a Top 20 show in the Nielsen ratings for four straight years and attracted prominent guest stars, including Lana Turner, Rod Taylor, Celeste Holm, Cliff Robertson, and Gina Lollobrigida. This set contains 18 episodes on four DVDs.

(continued from page 18) is dreaming, however, Freddy is in his element and he can kill. The premise is quite simple: Freddy homicidally haunts the sleep of Elm Street teens. Craven masterfully sets up suspense before he unleashes his graphic bloodletting, and Englund manages to be genuinely scary while dropping the occasional wisecrack. Sequels threw things out of balance and Freddy became more a standup comic than an object of terror. This movie also marked the big-screen debut of Johnny Depp as one of the teenagers targeted by Freddy. Special features include alternate takes, filmmaking secrets, commentary tracks with director Craven, Robert Englund and other actors in the picture, alternate endings, a making-of featurette, and a mini-documentary on New Line horror. One of the most interesting and under-publicized events on the home entertainment front is the creation of the Warner Archive Collection, a broad selection of mostly never-before-on-DVD titles from the 1920s to 2009. All genres are represented, and many major vintage stars, such as Bette Davis, Spencer Tracy, Joan Crawford, Robert Taylor, Judy Garland, Tony Curtis, Alan Ladd, Clark Gable, and Katharine Hepburn, are represented. More contemporary artists are also featured. Highlights of the massive collection include the Sophia Loren/Marcello Mastroianni film “The Priest’s Wife” (1971), part romantic comedy, part exploration of human and clerical frailties. Father Don Mario has pledged obedience and celibacy, but though the spirit is willing, the flesh is weak, especially when lovely Valeria Billi sets her romantic designs on him. “Saint Joan” (1957) stars 17-year-old Jean Seberg as the visionary Maid of Orleans in this Ottto Preminger production adapted from the George Bernard Shaw play. Richard Widmark plays a Dauphin more court jester than future king, and John Gielgud is the English commander who scoffs, “The angels may be on the side of the church, but I have 800 soldiers.” “Meeting Venus” (1991) stars Glenn Close as international opera diva Karin Anderson. Everything is set for the rehearsal and nothing can go wrong at Opera Europa.
