Sierra Club offers program on black bears Bear Education and Resource Group Director Janet Piszar will present “Living with Black Bears in New Jersey” at 7:30 p.m. on April 22. This free program, which is sponsored by the North Jersey Sierra Club, will be held at Flat Rock Brook Nature Center, 443 Van Nostrand Avenue, Englewood.All are welcome to attend and learn how to peacefully coexist with black bears. The nonprofit BEAR Group was established in 1992 to dispel the myths that give rise to unfounded fears of black bears. The group advocates the use of non-lethal practices to manage bears in human residential areas. For more information, call (201) 461-4534. Motorists alerted to road closing The Township of Wyckoff advises local motorists that Godwin Avenue will soon be closed from Franklin Avenue to Greenwood Avenue due to construction that will last four to five weeks. Work will be performed Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Motorists traveling on Godwin Avenue should anticipate delays, plan extra travel time, follow the posted detour, or plan an alternate route. Car Wash supports disaster relief The American Red Cross Youth Council of Ridgewood will host its Third Annual Car Wash on April 24 to help raise funds for the Red Cross local disaster relief fund. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Ridgewood Red Cross Center, 74 Godwin Avenue, in Ridgewood. Admission is free and all donations collected will go directly toward the local disaster relief fund of the American Red Cross of Northern New Jersey. This year’s even will include music and prizes. RBARI hosts Golf Outing The Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge, Inc. will hold the Eric M. Simonyan Memorial Golf Outing on May 10 at the High Mountain Golf Club, 845 Ewing Avenue, Franklin Lakes. Proceeds will benefit the animals at this no-kill shelter. The entry fee is $695 for a foursome or $180 for a single golfer. The fee includes breakfast, cart, practice balls, round of golf at a top quality course, and lunch afterwards. Registration will be at 8:30 a.m., and tee time will be at 10 a.m. Registration forms are available at www.rbari. org/golf. Volunteer opportunities available The Longview Assisted Living Residence at Christian Health Care Center in Wyckoff is looking for volunteers for a variety of activities. Friendly visitors are needed from 10 to 11 a.m. and/or from 3 to 4 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday to visit with, read to, or play a game with residents. Volunteers who can assist with bingo are needed from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, and volunteers who will provide assistance with writing or retrieving e-mails are needed from 3 to 4 p.m. Thursday. Healing Hearts provides support for children A bereavement support group for children, Healing Hearts at Hackensack University Medical Center, will begin April 28. The program is designed to help children and their families who have experienced the death of a close loved one. Children will meet with a creative arts therapist and will use a combination of art and activities to express grief. The children, divided into appropriate age groups, will have peer support from other grieving children. An adult companion support group led by a licensed social worker will meet at the same time as the children’s groups. The program will meet for 10 sessions. An intake interview will take place prior to the first session. There is a $50 supplies fee for each child; no child will be denied services because of an inability to pay. Lions Club hosts annual fundraiser

The Saddle River Valley Lions Club’s annual car fundraiser is underway. This year’s prize is a “Red Candy” 2010 Ford Mustang Premium Sports Package V6 Coupe. Tickets are $10 and are available from any SRV Lions Club Member or at the Lions’ annual carnival, which will be held May 31 and through June 5. The carnival and car fundraiser are the club’s two major fundraising events of the year. Wristband Nights, featuring one price for all rides all night, will be held on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. The winner of the West Bergen presents ‘That’s Amoré’ The Friends of West Bergen Mental Healthcare will host “That’s Amoré” at Christ Church, 105 Cottage Place (corner of Franklin Avenue) in Ridgewood April 30. The evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. with hors d’oeuvres and a wine tasting provided by Carlo Russo’s Wine and Spirit World of Ho-Ho-Kus. Dinner will include pasta, salad, and bread, served by West Bergen’s Chief Executive Officer Michael J. Tozzoli. Other “celebrity” waiters will also be on hand. Learn to clean photo equipment In celebration of its 30th anniversary, Bergen County Camera will host a “spring cleaning” on April 24 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 270 Westwood Avenue, Westwood. Many people have old photography equipment stored somewhere, and some of it may be valuable. Members of the public are invited to bring in their unwanted equipment, and Bergen County Camera will evaluate it, and may offer to purchase some of it. Those who attend will also have an opportunity to purchase rarities, demo models, one-of-a-kind items, closeouts, and overstocks. Among the items offered are cameras, lenses, filters, bags and cases, tripods, binoculars, telescopes, frames, albums, books, lighting, and darkroom supplies. Dater to address historical societies The historical societies from Northwest Bergen County, including Allendale, Franklin Lakes, Ho-Ho-Kus, Mahwah, Ramsey, Oakland, Upper Saddle River, and Wyckoff, will host Thomas E. Dater, historian and former publisher, at a luncheon at the Ramsey Country Club on May 5 at noon. Dater will share the history of Northwest Bergen County. His family settled in this area in the 1700s. John Young Dater was the first senator from Ho-Ho-Kus Township and was instrumental in the development of Ramsey. His son, John Y. Dater II, founded “The Ramsey Journal” in 1892. Tom Dater has continued his family’s passion for collecting
