April 21, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES I, II, III & IV • Page 19 Waldwick Band concert to feature clarinet soloist The Waldwick Band will present its next concert on Saturday, April 24, at the Crescent School in Waldwick. The 8 p.m. concert will feature clarinetist Alex Kolpakchi. Kolpakchi started his love affair with the clarinet in his early teens and that passion has only increased with the years. He furthered his studies at the Conservatory for Music in the former USSR, graduating at the top of his class. He later worked in various venues that included big band ensembles, theater orchestras, operas, and his personal favorite -- symphonic ensembles. In the mid 1970s, Kolpakchi emigrated to Israel, eventually joining and becoming the principal clarinetist of the Police Band of the State of Israel. While serving with the band as its principal soloist, he traveled around the world and performed for various heads of state, dignitaries, and celebrities. When he arrived in the United States in 1988, Kolpakchi concentrated on repair and restoration of instruments for professional musicians. He currently performs with several Bergen County bands in addition to the Waldwick Band. At the upcoming concert, he will perform a composition by Hidash written for him, “The Fantasia for Clarinet.” The Waldwick Band ‘Smokey Joe’s Cafe’ (continued from page 17) production really sparkle. All the performers look as if they are having a great time, and the opening night audience was not shy about clapping along with the catchy tunes and rewarding the cast with a standing ovation at the curtain call. The show draws the audience in. The message is clearly, “Join us for a good time.” The orchestra, under the direction of Tom Helm, is onstage, occasionally curtained off from the performers up front but entirely visible for the whole second act as the singers occasionally interact with some of the musicians. The show has a spontaneous look, which I’m certain involved considerable rehearsal time, and the performers look comfortable as they segue from one number to the next. Brian Hemesath’s costumes, Jonathan Spencer’s sets, and Charlie Morrison’s lighting contribute considerably to the atmosphere. I especially liked the proscenium frame that simulates a giant jukebox -- an appropriate touch that lets the audience know at the outset they are about to hear some snappy songs. Lieber and Stoller are amazingly versatile as songwriters and have written for performers as diverse as the Shangri-Las, Procol Harum, and Peggy Lee. The collection of songs in “Smokey Joe’s Cafe” is not just a roster of hits. It also includes lesser-known songs. The lyrics can be sexy, subtle, romantic, upbeat, or a combination, and the beat is infectious. “Smokey Joe’s Café” will run through May 2. Performances are Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m., Thursdays at 1:30 and 7:30 p.m., Fridays at 8 p.m., Saturdays at 1:30 and 8 p.m., and Sundays at 1:30 and 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 to $92 and may be purchased by calling (973) 376-4343, online at www.papermill.org, or at the Paper Mill box office on Brookside Drive in Millburn. Also on the program will be the Waldwick Band’s Saxophone Quartet that will perform one of the earliest works for a solo saxophone, Jean Baptiste Singelee’s “Septieme Solo de Concours.” The band will be under the direction of Edmund A. Moderacki, who will conduct Gordon Jacob’s “Music for a Festival,” Hector Berlioz’s “Roman Carnival,” Morton Gould’s “American Salute,” and Jerry Brubaker’s “A Tribute to Kurt Weill.” Marches by Kenneth Alford, Edwin Franko Goldman, E. E. McCoy and Carl Teike will complete the program. Crescent School is located at 165 Crescent Avenue in Waldwick. There is no admission charge for this concert.
