Academy Award-winner Jeff Bridges and Maggie Gyllenhaal in ‘Crazy Heart.’

Oscar-winning performance of Jeff Bridges as Bad Blake, a country singer and songwriter whose peak performing years are behind him. He now ekes out a living playing rural bars and bowling alleys. When he is not working, he seeks solace in the bottle. Tommy Sweet (Colin Farrell), the former protégé of Bad, has gone on to become a superstar, but still reveres him. Tommy is eager to help get Bad’s career back on track and offers him a sizable paycheck to write some new songs for an upcoming tour. Director Scott Cooper has fashioned a leisurely paced character study of a man who has degenerated into a shadow of what he once was. Fame has faded, he hasn’t written a song in years, and alcohol has made his life mar-
ginally bearable. During his travels, Bad meets music reporter Jean (Maggie Gyllenhaal), a single mom with a young son, and a relationship develops. For a time, Bad latches onto Jean and her son as the family he lost. An attempt to reconnect with his son fails, and an almost-tragic situation involving Jean’s son threatens his newfound happiness. Bad Blake is a tour de force for Bridges, who shoulders the entire production with a combination of grace, empathy, and an effortless, underplayed performance that creates fireworks with introspective acting and a complete understanding of the character. What is so remarkable about Bridges is that the viewer does not see the process, but simply accepts him as his character. Robert Duvall turns up as Bad’s favorite bartender, a man who is far more than a drink dispenser. He “gets” Bad and his career slide, and sympathizes, but knows the singer can’t ease into self-pity if he wants his life to change. Bonus features on the Blu-ray edition include deleted scenes, an interview with Bridges, Gyllenhaal, and Duvall in which they discuss how they were cast, and a digital copy. “Crazy Heart” is also available on DVD. Only a handful of horror films that can be called classics have been made since 1980: One of them is “A Nightmare on Elm Street” (New Line Home Video), newly released on Blu-ray. This movie introduced Freddy Kreuger (Robert Englund) one of the most original and frightening characters in modern horror. Director Wes Craven introduced the idea that a nightmare creature can do real damage when his victim falls asleep. When his victim is awake, Freddy is helpless, sort of like a vampire in bright sunshine surrounded by crucifixes, garlic, and mirrors. When the victim (continued on Crossword page)
