Voters to decide on school trustees, tax levy
On April 20, Ramsey’s registered voters will choose three board of education trustees from the field of four candidates, and will cast their ballots on the tax levy associated with the proposed 2010-11 school budget. This year’s school budget totals $50,197,978 and includes a tax levy of $46,159,075. This spending plan includes a tax increase of approximately $332 for the owner of a home valued at the borough’s average assessment of $427,200. The district’s 100 percent loss of state aid led the school board to cut 15 full time staff positions, eliminate middle school sports, and reduce the budgets for technology, textbooks, and clubs at the middle school level. Class sizes will also increase. Incumbents Carrie Williams and Claudia Monteith are seeking election as are James Meiman and Timothy Finnegan. Finnegan, a 13-year borough resident, holds a BA from Muhlenberg College in Allentown Pennsylvania. For the last 12 years, he has been a supervisory/risk manager for J.P. Morgan Securities. The candidate has been involved in the Ramsey Junior Football Association and the Ramsey Baseball Association for the last six years. His three children attend Ramsey’s schools. Meiman is a lifelong resident of Ramsey. He holds a BS in business administration from LeMoyne College in Syracuse, New York, and an MBA in management from William Paterson University. He is creative director of the Kanebridge Corporation’s marketing department, where he has been employed for 25 years. The candidate is a volunteer coach and umpire for the Ramsey Baseball Association. He is a parishioner at Saint Paul’s Church, where he has served as a reader and a religious education instructor. Meiman and his wife Linda are the parents of two. Their daughter is a graduate of Ramsey High School and their son is currently in the fourth grade. Monteith was a Ramsey Board of Education trustee from 1996 to 2007, when she opted not to seek a new term. During her tenure, she served as vice president and as chair of various committees. In 2009, she returned to the board, replacing trustee Erik Endress, who resigned. She is a graduate of Ramsey High School and of the University of New Hampshire, where she received a BA in microbiology with a minor in chemistry. Now retired, she worked for over 30 years in the diagnostic/biotechnology industry. Her community involvement has included work with the local Boy and Girl Scout organizations and service on the Ramsey Junior Football Board. The candidate is cochair of the Who’s Who in Ramsey Community Directory, and served two terms on the Ramsey Golf & Country Club Board of Directors. She has been a Sunday school teacher at the First Presbyterian Church for 18 years. She and her husband Bob have two children and one grandchild. Williams has been a Ramsey resident for 18 years. She holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Denver and is currently director of operations for an estate planning firm. She has served on the Ramsey Board of Education for the past three years. Her son is a junior at Ramsey High School and her twin daughters attend eighth grade at Smith School. She is a past-president of the Ramsey Education Foundation and has chaired several PTO committees.
