Township approves road improvement ordinance
by Frank J. McMahon The Mahwah Council has adopted a $500,000 bond ordinance to provide for various road improvements in the township this year. The roads to be improved include Miller Road from Franklin Turnpike to East Mahwah Road, Glen Grey Road from the bridge to Stabled Way, the entire length of Split Rock Road, the entire length of Jahn Court, Fardale Avenue from its intersection with Morris Avenue and Barthof Lane to the culvert west of Pendelton Road, and a striping modification of Ridge Road in the vicinity of the Ramapo Ridge Middle School. Miller Road is located in the northern part of the township in the Cragmere section and Glen Grey Road is located in the southern part of the township off Ramapo Valley Road near the Oakland border. Split Rock Road is located in the northeastern portion of the township off Stag Hill Road and Fardale Avenue is in the southern part of the township near the Borough of Franklin Lakes. The restriping of Ridge Road will move the center double line on that road to the east to provide a southbound lane for traffic to legally travel up the hill when vehicles are parked along the western part of that road while parents are waiting to pick up their children from the Ramapo Ridge Middle School at the end of the school day. The project will also include miscellaneous curb and drainage work and the overall scope of the work will consist of milling and reconstruction of the roads as needed and the resurfacing of those roads. Curbs and sidewalks will be replaced as needed and drainage in these areas will be upgraded including the upgrade of inlet grates to conform with New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection requirement, and detectable warning surfaces will be provided at all barrier-free access ramps leading to and from the roadways. The township has received a state aid grant for road improvements for Miller Road in the amount of $200,000, but the estimated construction cost of the improvements to Miller Road is $310,000. Last month, the township council approved a resolution approving a $39,100 fee for Boswell McClave Engineering to perform the design engineering services required for this project. The 2009 road improvement project in Mahwah was contracted at $250,242 and it included portions of Macarthur Boulevard, plus Ridge Road, Glen Gray Road, Greene Street, and Chestnut Street as part of that year’s Northwest Bergen Cooperative Resurfacing Program in which the Borough of Ramsey was the lead agency. In 2008, the township awarded a con-
struction contract for that year’s road improvement program in the amount of $636,952 plus an additional amount of $62,013 for certain additional, related work for additional items which were not included in the Northwest Bergen Cooperative Pricing Program. Under a separate contract that year, a major portion of Corporate Drive, which extends from Macarthur Drive to Route 17 southbound and is the location of the township’s municipal building, several corporate buildings, and a hotel, was milled and repaved with the funding provided by two state local aid grants totaling $350,000.
Mahwah firefighters will be on hand to meet residents at the Third Annual Scoop Night, which will be held April 28 from 4 to 9 p.m. at Baskin Robbins in the Ramapo Center on Macarthur Boulevard. Attend-
‘Scoop Night’ scheduled
