The Tea Party Coalition supports candidates who stand for limited government, fiscal responsibility, and free market principles. Disaster assistance available Assistance is available to New Jersey residents who were affected by the storms and flooding that began March 12. Residents who require information or assistance may dialing NJ 2-1-1 or visit the companion website at www. nj211.org. NJ 2-1-1 is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The service is free, confidential, and multilingual. A Flood Assistance Guide is available at http://www. nj211.org/flood.cfm and covers how to remove mold, tips for hiring contractors, and local social service organizations that help individuals, families, and small businesses. Those who need help with the cleanup of water and mud may also register with 2-1-1. In partnership with the state Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters, 2-1-1 is registering requests for flood cleanup help for the elderly, disabled, or those needing special assistance. Volunteers groups are helping with cleanup. There is no cost for this service. All services are available by dialing 2-1-1 or visiting www.nj211.org. The Federal Emergency Management Agency is also offering aid to Bergen County. Individuals and business owners are urged to register as soon as possible by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362), TTY 1-800-462-7585 (for the speech or hearing impaired), or online anytime at www. disasterassistance.gov. These toll-free phone numbers will operate 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week, until further notice. Assistance may include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster. West Bergen provides information on SSI and SSD Beads bring joy to Valley patients At The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, hospitalized women and children, and those receiving out-patient treatment at the hospital’s Blumenthal Cancer Center, receive weekly visits from Maryann Corey -- ‘The Bead Lady,’ a cheery volunteer with a colorful box of dozens of beads just waiting to be turned into bracelets, necklaces, earring, key chains, or anything else the patient desires. In addition to the colorful box of beads, this volunteer brings along the ‘Silly Milly’ crow doll to entertain pediatric patients. The Bead Lady is part of the non-profit organization known as The Portable Playhouse, Inc. The group’s mission is to bring arts and crafts to hospitals and cancer centers to help distract patients from unpleasant medical treatments while enhancing their healing process and nurturing their spirits. The Portable Playhouse program at The Valley Hospital is sponsored by The Carlson Family Foundation, based in Allendale. Learn about sleep deprivation in teens The Valley Hospital Department of Community Health will host a free program entitled “Teens and Sleep: A Wake Up Call” on April 21 at 7 p.m., in the Valley Hospital Conference Center, 223 North Van Dien Avenue, Ridgewood. According to the National Sleep Foundation, America’s adolescents, children grades sixth through 12, are not getting enough sleep. Tracy Carbone, M.D., director of the Pediatric Sleep Disorders and Apnea Center, and Kim Cahill, R.N., nurse coordinator at the center, will present this program. Learn about normal sleep physiology, common sleep issues facing teens, and the most prevalent teenage sleep disorders. Registration is required. UNICO presents Texas Hold’em Tournament On May 7, the Greater Ramsey Chapter of UNICO National will hold a charity Texas Hold-em Poker Tournament in Ramsey that will offer entries into World Series of Poker events in Las Vegas as prizes for every player who makes the final table. Each prize of an entry into a WSOP event comes with a Visa gift card. Tournament buy-in is $250 ($300 after April 30), for which a player gets $5,000 in chips. Those who “bust out” early and want a chance for a comeback may avail themselves of “re-buys,” which will be offered at $150 during the first 90 minutes of play. Professional dealers will make sure all play proceeds quickly and according to the rules. A gourmet Italian buffet dinner and beer, wine, and soft drinks and dessert are included in the buy-in price. Nonplaying guests are invited to partake in the food and fun for $50. The event will be May 7 at the Adorno Fathers Banquet Hall, 575 Darlington Avenue, Ramsey. Car enthusiasts, vendors sought for show The freshman class at Indian High School in Oakland will host its annual Car Show on April 24 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the school, 97 Yawpo Avenue in Oakland. The rain date is Sunday, April 25. The show will feature antique cars, hot rods, military vehicles, motorcycles, and trucks. The event will also include a disc jockey, food, an auction, and fundraisers. Vendors must be registered by April 24. Tables are $25 each. Setup is at 8 a.m. Car registration is $15, and cars must be registered and on-site by 11:30 a.m. Judging will begin at noon. Chamber scholarship applications available Applications are now available for the annual Mahwah Regional Chamber of Commerce’s scholarship for students attending Ramapo College. Deadline for applications is April 30. The Chamber offers this $1,500 scholarship to students who are currently attending, or planning to enter, Ramapo College in the 2010-11 school year.
