Ho-Ho-Kus September 29, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 7 Administrator working to save money for borough by Jennifer Crusco Ho-Ho-Kus Borough Administrator Don Cirulli recently told the governing body that the municipality’s new phone system will save an estimated $5,000 per year, and switching to a new power supply company could save $35,000 to $40,000 per year. Asked about the phone system, Cirulli told Villadom TIMES the borough has been working with Avaya, a large company that provides hardware and software, but services its accounts through smaller, local companies. Cirulli said he has been trying to simplify the phone system since he came to Ho-Ho-Kus two years ago, but the phone and computer systems are hooked up together, and were complex to change. He wanted to improve the system, because it took a long time to get service when it was needed. “We brought in a new service company (Mass Communications of New York, or Masscom) and they brought in a company on a one-time basis that reviews your entire system – each line – and cleans everything up for you,” Cirulli said, adding that the cost of the one-time review was approximately $3,000. “They did a professional job,” he continued. “They cleaned up and got rid of things we didn’t need.” Cirulli said the borough is still using the Avaya hardware and software, but will now continue to work with Masscom for service. He also reported that the borough is in the process of changing its Internet service provider from Megapath to Optimum. “What we did was a combination upgrade and simplification,” he said. “That combination will save approximately $5,000 a year.” Asked about the possible use of a new utility supplier, Cirulli said he has been looking into non-PSE&G electric and gas that would still be delivered by PSE&G. “PSE&G buys power from other production companies,” Cirulli said. “PSE&G makes its money on the delivery of the power. Companies now allow you to buy power that will be delivered through PSE&G, but we buy it at a lower rate.” He said he has already received quotes from two companies. One company said the borough could save $100,000 over a three-year period based on recent estimates, according to Cirulli. The borough recently had three companies, including PSE&G, conduct energy audits, and officials have looked into a solar option. Cirulli noted that money is tight in Ho-Ho-Kus, and the borough has already reduced its staff. However, he and other local officials continue to seek options to save funds.
