Waldwick
The Waldwick Community Alliance has come up with a creative fundraiser for its Waldwick Train Station restoration project that is creating a lot of excitement in town: a commemorative coal piece. When the WCA took possession of the aging and rapidly deteriorating station and began planning to restore the building to its 19th century glory, members discovered an entire room full of coal when they opened the door to the former ladies room. The stove that once provided heat was still inside. “By purchasing a piece of coal, you will not only get to own a piece of local history, but you will help ensure the preservation of this locally significant building for years to come,” said WCA Vice President Doug Cowie. Each coal piece sells for $25. A pamphlet that is included inside the box with the commemorative coal piece notes that since Waldwick’s train station opened in 1886, thousands of people have passed through its doors. “Originally built by the New York, Delaware & West-

ern Railroad, the Waldwick Train Station was a somewhat typical Queen Anne style building of its day, being built without any plumbing, electric or central heating system. The only way to escape a cold brisk day was to cozy up next to the cast iron stove in the waiting area,” the pamphlet states. “It’s hard to believe that, for over a century, this was
the only source of heat the station ever had.” Some 120 years later, residents can relive that feeling every time they finger one of those coals. The commemorative coal piece may be purchased for $25 at www.WaldwickCommunityAlliance.org or by calling Douglas Cowie at (201) 873-8919.
