Officials set upgrade goals after hearing from public
Waldwick Board of Education members and Superintendent Dr. Patricia Raupers have been walking through the district’s school buildings after hearing concerns from parents about the condition of the Crescent and Traphagen schools. Late last week, Dr. Raupers advised that district officials had believed the schools were in good condition for the start of the new school year. The superintendent noted that, depending on the time the parents might have visited the schools, they may have received an unfavorable impression if boxes were in the halls as teachers were moving their classrooms at the end of the school year, or if work was being done on the buildings during the summer months. “We are working on long-term and short-term goals to identify and prioritize projects, and are moving forward with those items,” Dr. Raupers said. “We looked at what people were complaining about and will be painting in certain areas.” She added, “We have a long-range plan and will continue to work on that.” Immediate concerns at Traphagen involved a leaky roof, Dr. Raupers added, noting that the district carried out a drainage project at that school over the summer. Traphagen has had a series of renovations in recent years, the superintendent said, noting that there are multiple buildings on the site. Window repairs were made at Traphagen over the last few years, she said. Dr. Raupers said the Crescent School received a new roof approximately two years ago, but pointed out that the school is “not shiny and new.” She stated that Crescent’s all-purpose room is older and still has its original floor.
The middle school, she said, is new and absorbed a lot of the district’s facilities funding. Crescent Elementary School parents turned out for the second time in less than a month to a Waldwick Board of Education meeting last week to complain about the condition of the school and their perceived disparity in the academic and extra curricular offerings between the Crescent and Traphagen schools. They urged the board to pay more attention than it has to the 42-year-old building. Built in 1968, Crescent School has not undergone any major renovations, except some bathroom upgrades a couple of years ago and all-purpose room and stage improvements. Traphagen, built in 1957, has had more extensive upgrades.
