Page 26 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • September 22, 2010 DVDs (continued from Restaurant page) He is forced to fight daily for his life against deadly foes, under the brutal whip of trainer Doctore (Peter Mensah) and condemned to the world of the arena where blood and death provide popular entertainment. Spartacus’ rebellious instincts, his intense love for his wife Sura (Erin Cummings), and his masterful fighting skills drive him to win a series of near-impossible battles, which sets in motion a revolution against the tyranny of Rome. This version covers the same ground as the feature film starring Kirk Douglas, but is far more violent and more intense. Perhaps the mini-series paints a more accurate picture of the time, but the Stanley Kubrick-directed “Sparacus” with its all-star cast is far more successful at depicting the charisma of the man who was able to rally such a huge number of men against Rome and its mighty legions. If it’s bloody action you want, this mini-series won’t disappoint. Extras include several featurettes, behind-the-scenes footage, audio commentaries, interviews, and outtakes. The Blu-ray edition contains extended episodes. “The Experiment” (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment) is based on the real-life 1971 Stanford Prison Experiment conducted by the psychologist Philip Zimbardo and his research team at Stanford University. Twenty-four males were recruited to role-play prisoners and prison guards for two weeks to document the effects of power and control. Values are tested and lines are crossed when seemingly normal participants are pushed to the breaking point as the experiment spirals out of control. Directed by Paul T. Scheuring, this remake of the 2002 German film “Das Experiment” stars Adrien Brody (“The Piano”) and Forest Whitaker (“The Last King of Scotland”). “Fantomas” (Kino On Video), based on popular French novellas, is Luis Feuillade’s ambitious series of five films made in 1913 and 1914 that became the model of espionage serials in pre-World War I Europe. It laid the foundation for such films as Feuillade’s own “Les Vampires” and Fritz Lang’s “Dr. Mabuse.” Rene Navarre stars as the criminal lord of Paris, the master of disguise, the creeping assassin in black: Fantomas. Over the course of five feature films (adding up to a 5 1/2 hour epic), Fantomas, along with his accomplices and mistresses, is pursued by the equally resourceful Inspector Juve (Edmund Breon) and his friend, journalist Jerome Fandor (Georges Melchior). Restored by Gaumont and the Cinematheque Francaise, “Fantomas” is color-tinted. Special features include two audio commentaries by film historians; two rare Feuillade films, “The Nativity” (1910) and “The Dwarf” (1912); and a short documentary about the director. “Bored to Death: The Complete First Season” (HBO Home Entertainment) follows Jonathan Ames (Jonathan Schwartzman) as he solves a variety of cases in New York despite being completely inexperienced as a private detective. Jonathan pursues each case with unbridled enthusiasm and very little discretion, and abandons all sense of reality while avoiding work on his regular writing gig and second novel. Ted Danson and Zach Galifianakis co-star. “Stripped Naked” (Anchor Bay) is the story of a determined woman who will do anything to get ahead. Cassie (Sarah Allen) is an exotic dancer who wants to get out of the business. When she secretly witnesses a drug deal that has gone bad, she nabs the money from the scene, planning to leave the country and start a new life. She finds it’s not that easy. There are people willing to help her, but others want her dead. The film is laced with double and triple crosses. “Stomp the Yard 2: The Homecoming” (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment) continues the story of Chance Harris (Collins Pennie) as he tries to find a balance among school, work, relationships, and the opportunity to perform at the nationally televised step competition during homecoming weekend. In the countdown to a national step-off, rivalries at Truth University run red hot. The Theta Nus are counting on new pledge Chance to lead the team to victory, but he is too absorbed by his own problems. He is at odds with his father, caught up in romantic troubles, and targeted by a street gang for an unpaid debt.
