Historian to discuss Teddy Roosevelt Historian Charles McSorley will present his lecture “Teddy Roosevelt: His Life and Times” to the Ho-HoKus Seniors on Oct. 12. The group will meet at 1 p.m. in the education center of the Hermitage on Franklin Turnpike. McSorley’s presentation includes music and slides that cover the turbulent and exciting times of the 26th president. This program is sponsored by the New Jersey Council for the Humanities and is free and open to the public. The seniors group meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month. Rutgers professor to address Garden Club On Sept. 27, the Ho-Ho-Kus Garden Club will host Bruce Crawford, director of the Rutgers Garden. The meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. Crawford, an adjunct professor in landscape architecture at Rutgers University, will discuss hydrangeas. Woman’s Club plan meeting The first meeting of the Ho-Ho-Kus Woman’s Club’s fall season will be held on Monday, Oct. 4 at noon at Saint Bartholomew’s Church Hall, Sheridan Avenue, Ho-Ho-Kus. Following luncheon and a short business meeting, the group will play bingo. Guests are invited and new members are welcome. Church hosts Rummage & Craft Sale Saint Bartholomew’s Church, 70 Sheridan Avenue, Ho-Ho-Kus, will hold its Second Annual Rummage and Craft Sale Sept. 25 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine. This parish-wide sale will feature a wide range of merchandise including furniture, tools, kitchen wares, antiques, toys, linens, office supplies, and much more. Hand crafted jewelry and accessories will also be offered for purchase. Proceeds will benefit the church and its ministries. Established in 1904, Saint Bartholomew’s is a member of the Episcopal Diocese of Newark. The church’s outreach efforts include collecting clothing and household items for Saint Philips Methodist Ministries of Paterson, hosting regular meetings of AA, conducting food drives on behalf of the Ramapough Indians, providing support for migrant workers and their young children, and assisting homeless individuals from the area. Marber offers college admission advice On Sept. 28, Joshua Marber, MS Ed., will present “Choosing the Right College” at the Worth-Pinkham Memorial Library in Ho-Ho-Kus. The program will begin at 7 p.m. Teens and their families will learn about the college admission process, including how to get
started on the right road. Marber has over 10 years of experience in education and counseling, having worked as an admissions counselor, financial aid counselor, and academic advisor. He has been presenting workshops throughout the area for more than five years. The Worth-Pinkham Memorial Library is located at 91 Warren Avenue, Ho-Ho-Kus. Auxiliary host Beefsteak Dinner The Ladies Auxiliary of the Ho-Ho-Kus Fire Department will hold a Beefsteak Dinner on Saturday, Sept. 25 from 7:30 to 11 p.m. at the Guardian Angel Church in Allendale. Attendees will enjoy all-you-can-eat steak from Nightengale Catering, soda, coffee, and dessert, while listening to the music provided by a DJ. Reservations are $40 per person and are being accepted through Sept. 20. Checks may be made payable to “HHKFD LA” and sent to: Trish Ludwig, 618 Hollywood Avenue, Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ 07423. Tickets will not be sold at the door, and participants are encouraged to purchase tickets early. Proceeds will be donated to Go 4 the Goal Foundation in honor of Blake Buffa of Ho-Ho-Kus. New Deal programs explored The Hermitage History Roundtable will host Dave Smilon, professor of history at Bergen Community College, on Wednesday, Sept. 29 at 7:30 p.m. at the Hermitage, 335 North Franklin Turnpike, Ho-Ho-Kus. During the Great Depression, the WPA, PWA, and CCC put people back to work building infrastructure and improving the environment across America. Smilon will discuss the work done in Bergen County and the projects that are still here and in use. The Saddle River and Emerson municipal buildings, the Westwood Post Office, and Graydon Pool in Ridgewood are all New Deal projects. Learn more about this fascinating time period in Bergen County’s history. The program is free and open to the public. Deadline is Wednesday at noon.
