Students, teachers may participate in VFW contests
by Jennifer Crusco The Washington Elm Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 192 (Ho-Ho-Kus/Ridgewood) and its Ladies Auxiliary invite students in grades six through 12 and educators of students in kindergarten through grade 12 to participate in one of three upcoming contests. In putting out the call for contestants, Post 192 Commander Stanley A. Kober noted, “Last year’s first place awardee as a New Jersey State VFW Outstanding High School Citizenship Teacher was John K. Domville (of Ridgewood High School) sponsored by the Washington Elm VFW Post.” Once again this year, teachers who compete for the National Citizenship Teacher Award will have the opportunity to win cash prizes to cover their professional development expenses. Three teachers are selected: one who teaches elementary school, one who teaches middle school, and one who teaches high school. Winners have the opportunity to compete in the VFW’s annual teacher recognition competition to win $1,000 cash, a plaque, and an all expenses paid trip to Washington, DC. In addition, $1,000 cash and a plaque will be awarded to the teacher’s school. “The VFW’s Citizenship Education program stimulates interest in America’s history, traditions, institutions, civic responsibility, flag etiquette, and patriotism,” Kober explained. Current K-12 classroom teachers (teaching at least half the school day in a classroom environment) are eligible. Previous state and national VFW winners are ineligible. Nominations may be submitted by peers, supervisors, or other interested individuals who are not related to the contestant. Nominations must arrive at VFW Post #192 by Nov. 1. Post-level winners advance to the district competition, and district-level winners advance to the state competition. State-level winners then compete for national cash awards, plaques, and a trip to Washington, D.C. Ho-Ho-Kus and Ridgewood residents who want to nominate teachers should contact Post 192 at (201) 445-1121 or immediately write to the Washington Elm VFW Post #192, 620 Cliff Street, Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ 07423 for an application. High school students are invited to participate in the VFW’s Voice of Democracy Scholarship Competition. Entrants in this annual audio essay competition must write and then record a three-to-five minute audio essay. This year’s theme is: “Does my generation have a role in America’s Future?” Participants will have the opportunity to win thousands of dollars in scholarships, a trip to Washington, D.C., and other awards. Students must submit their original entries to VFW Post #192 by Nov. 1. Post-level winners will proceed to the district level and then to the state level. The winner of the state competition will receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. in March 2011. State-level winners receive at least a $1,000 national scholarship, but any one of them could win the $30,000 first place award. High school students from Ho-Ho-Kus and Ridgewood should contact Post 192 at (201) 445-1121 or immediately write to the Washington Elm VFW Post #192, 620 Cliff Street, Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ 07423 for an application. Middle school students may enter the Patriot’s Pen Essay Competition. Students in grades six, seven, and eight will have the opportunity to win thousands of dollars in U.S. Savings Bonds and a trip to be honored at the VFW and (continued on page 10)
