The borough council last week turned down a request from the Waldwick Soccer Association to have the DPW refuel the portable spotlights at the soccer field and then reimburse the borough for the cost. Council members expressed concern that the truck needed to bring in the fuel would damage the field, which is now is good condition following years of complaints. “What was the plan when they got the fixtures?” asked Councilman Don Sciolaro. Request to provide diesel for lights nixed “If they come up with a plan on how to provide the fuel without trampling on the field, I’d be interested. It would certainly be for the benefit of the community,” said Councilman Frank Palladino. Councilwoman Anita Bozzo contended that the practice would set a precedent for future requests. “We’d be opening a can of worms. If we do it for one, we’d have to do it for everyone else,” Bozzo said. Council members recalled that the baseball association had requested that the town fuel its tractor, and the town had turned the non-profit organization down. The comment that solidified the council against the request came from Mary Ann Viviani, the borough’s chief financial officer. Viviani said since the borough does not pay tax for its fuel, it would have to report any sales of it to the IRS. “As soon as you start selling, you’d have to start filling out IRS forms,” cautioned Viviani. Councilman Thomas Giordano wanted to explore other options before casting his vote. “I’d rather wait. There might be a legal way,” he said.
