Page 10 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • September 15, 2010 Waldwick The Borough of Waldwick will be bidding out an option for once-a-week garbage collection during the winter months. Borough Administrator Gary Kratz recommended the change as a possible savings. The decision to change the schedule would be made once the bids are in and the costs are analyzed in mid-November, he said. Kratz said that the current contract with Future Sanitation expires at the end of December, and he said he was looking for different ways to reduce the costs. The oncea-week collection, used by some other area towns, is one option. Limiting the number of cans that can be put out is another. Going out for a three-year contract instead of five, he said, might also result in lower costs. Borough set to bid once-a-week garbage pick up Under a revised schedule being considered, curbside solid waste pick up would be once a week from September to March, and twice a week for the remaining months. The winter pick ups would be Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays to avoid conflicts with Monday holidays, Kratz said. “In some neighborhoods it would be tough to put out so many cans at curbside,” said Councilman Don Sciolaro. Kratz said one drawback would be that a greater amount of garbage on one day would require two trucks. He said whereas the amount of solid waste had decreased over the last several years, it was now going up. “People are buying and consuming more,” he said. “Don’t change. We are taking a lot away from people,” said Councilman Tom Giordano. Resident Al Coldon, speaking from the audience, agreed. “How much can you cut before you are not doing a thing for the people. Leave it the way it is,” he said. Councilman Frank Palladino said he favored a five-year contract so that lower prices could be locked in. Kratz said that contractors are not as certain of their costs, particularly diesel fuel, four or five years out, so they might quote higher prices overall to protect themselves. Kratz said he would bid out each year separately, and then could pick and choose how many to take. Currently, the town pays $275,000 a year for garbage collection and about $500,000 in dumping fees at the Veolia transfer station in Paterson.
